A stoma is created when a person undergoes a surgical procedure which results in a section of the bowel being brought to the surface of the abdominal wall.

The bowel is opened and formed into a stoma, which will discharge faecal matter or urine, depending upon the type of surgery. A collection pouch is fitted over the stoma to collect the material coming through this alternative elimination site.

People of all ages may require a stoma, from newborn babies to the very elderly
The stoma may be permanent, but most are temporary
Stomas can be created anywhere along the gastrointestinal tract, depending upon where the problem occurs.

Most people learn to manage the daily care of the stoma as part of their usual hygiene routine. A return to a normal diet is to be expected.

People with stomas can return to work, recreation, parenthood and travel – in fact, almost everything they would want to do.

There is a governmental scheme to subsidise the equipment required

No-one else needs to know that there is a stoma.

Under the skilled hands of Professor Ton Tran and the marvelous care of the team at St John of God Berwick Hospital, Sang will have surgery this weekend to correct bilateral talipes. This condition is also known as clubfoot and means one or both feet are rotated inward and downward.
Please join us in welcoming Sang to Australia and in wishing him a speedy recovery! 😊👋

Feedback we receive from a large portion of our female clients is about how much the mental load of their lives impacts how stressed and anxious they are, and how it can be hard to find time to seek the support strategies needed to make things better.

Our Working Women's Wellness course is designed for you. One night a week for four weeks, you'll get to take part in art therapy sessions, hear from our physio for wellness along with sessions from our clinical team.

Research is a wonderful thing! Over the last few decades, hundreds of reports have been conducted on all things relating to baby sleep. How do you get babies to sleep? How do we reduce SIDS? What are the safest places for a baby to sleep to avoid harm? Why do babies get flat patches on the skull sometimes? All this research has helped develop safe sleep guidelines that reduce the chance of harm to an infant while they sleep.

Key takeaways - always put babes to sleep on their back. Provide baby with a space to sleep - cots and bassinets should be free of bumpers and toys.
