Returning to running or sport after having a baby??

I know it's tempting to just hit 6 weeks and be "cleared" by your doctor and then hit the pavement.....but have you assessed your individual risk of lower limb injury (70% of running post-natal women develop a lower limb running related injury) AND pelvic floor dysfunction risk (approx 30% of running post natal women develop pelvic floor dysfunction).

Step 1:
Risk profiles and assessing readiness to run

Step 2:
A graduated and individualised resistance training program over 12 weeks. Some women will be ready to start at 2 weeks and some a bit later. The fourth trimester and newborns are hard to predict! Core and pelvic floor specific training comes in here too.

Step 3:
Add in plyometrics, ballistic and impact. A return to run program (interval style with walk/run components usually) may start here from 3-4 months after birth. Some athletes start sooner - individualised programs are key!

Step 4:
Maintenance resitance training with running progressions. If you have return high impact sport goals then agility and sport specific drills start here. Definitely a 4 months post birth phase!

👉I know it's slow.

👉I know you want to get back to your beloved running.

👉Take the steps and health care advice to avoid injury and set-backs.

👉Be kind to yourself. Training after baby is VERY different to pre-baby.

Hola!

Just on a little 2 week break exploring the gorgeous Coral Bay and Exmouth. This is me at Wooramel station sneaking in some movement after sitting in the car for extended periods - hello achy hips and general fatigue 🙄

Yep, I packed some weights and the camping bench came in quite handy 😉 I felt SO much better after a 15 minute jog chasing my girls on their bikes and some weights (squats and bent over row).

I'm a relax, recharge and routine kinda gal 😂 Want a holiday exercise or rehab program?? I can help with that 🙋‍♀️ No equipment necessary but resistance band is super easy to pack!

Admittedly, I had planned to be "up and running" by the end of 2020 🤔😳🤯 But, between COVID and caring for a both a dear friend and a family member battling with mental health I just didn't have the time or head space for "just one more thing". The time has come to focus and put my business owner pants/athletic wear on! 😂🏃‍♀️

Ahhhh to be young again! Nothing like being out chinned by your mini-me to get the motivation going!! 😂😜

But, in all seriousness (after you have recovered from awesome chin up abilities😜) let's talk girls in sport for Women's Health Week 2021.

⭐ Children who see or participate with parent's who exercise are more likely to be active. Monkey see, monkey do ! 🐵🐵 Focus on the idea of strength and keeping the body healthy rather than aesthetics and getting a "bikini body"🤢 though 💪💪💪

⭐ 50% of Australian teen girls stop sport by 17

⭐90% or more of adult bone mass is gained in childhood and the puberty years of being a teen. Lay the foundations down, both physically and mentally, in the teens.

⭐ Bones need load (and sufficient dietary and hormonal input) to build bone mineral density. Take away exercise of the moderate to higher impact type and teen girls might be changing their risk of osteoporosis later in life.

⭐ Sport is not the only way to load up our bones and muscles - I know not all teens love activity or the potential judgement and pressure of being in sport but their are many options for finding movement and exercise that suits them. PM me for more info on how I can set up a remote or in-home program for your teen girl 🏃‍♀️🏄‍♀️🚣‍♀️⛹‍♀️🏋‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤾‍♀️🤽‍♀️🧘‍♀️

We’ve experienced a really lovely problem in our first month of opening… I’m fully booked for four weeks in advance so that means Women’s Health clients are having to wait a little while to get in.

So we have been able to take on another Women’s Health Physio even earlier than we originally planned! And Jess Vanson was someone I had headhunted as soon as we knew we were opening the clinic.

Why?

💜 she’s extremely experienced and has worked in private practice both here and in Sydney

💜 she’s one of only a handful of other women’s health physios who fit pessaries for prolapse management like I do

💜 she has been a musculoskeletal and sports physio for even longer than she’s been a women’s health physiotherapist, with a particular passion for the hip and pelvis, and a love of everything exercise and sport 💪🏻

Movement and exercise can be done in little "snacks" of time if, like me, you don't have 60 minutes to spare for exercise - try and find x4-6 five minute movement snacks in your day.

Here is my movement snack schedule today:
⭐ Play chasey with my puppy, Coco (he had my daughters socks 🐶😂) for a quick 5 minute agility session out the back: 5 mins

⭐ Pre- run yoga low back and hip unload prep (downward dog with walk dog, warriors and skandasana or skater): 5mins

⭐ Single leg heel raise on door step and single leg sit to stand from chair when my Smart (and mildly patronising😜) watch reminds me to move when I hit my laptop time: x2 sets of 5mins

⭐Mindfulness body scan with pelvic clock after the kids have gone to bed tonight: 5mins

TOTAL: 25mins of movement snacks spread throughout the day plus 20min quick run for some moderate intensity activity.
