supporting families on the journey to pregnancy, during preparation for labour and birth and beyond
Join the journey…..https://www.instagram.com/arewewellonthewaytoparenthood?igsh=MXR6czVxb2Vha25kdg%3D%3D&utm_source=qr follow my new page for everything research related as we find out if we are emotionally well as women and mothers in Australia 🇦🇺 link also in bio
This picture I feel summarises the last 4 months of our family life. We’ve taken 2 trips first to Europe and Scotland then to Melbourne to celebrate the holiday. Social media has been non existent given my ongoing commitments to PhD study alongside very part time working in the hospital. I’m going to set up a new insta page to support the research I’m excited to share and will post that information here this week. At that time this account will close. Best wishes as always to everyone in their motherhood, fatherhood and parenting journeys!
Nominate a midwife what a great way to say thank you to a midwife who we all know we wouldn’t get through pregnancy labour and birth without.
My social media presence is non existent these days. But know I am busy just in a different way. 👊🏼
Well, breaking the holiday vacation vibe to jump on and celebrate our bodies. The bodies of all shapes and sizes and their ability to birth babies through the va**na. My dearest baby cousin, yesterday told me her birth story. Amidst comments that made my blood boil when she was told by a midwife in Scotland that despite a “higher than desired BMI, she HIDES IT WELL?” and was therefore a higher risk pregnancy than if her BMI was less…….this mum to be ROCKED her birth. Letting labour begin on its own, a few days after the “estimated due date” labouring at home, finding comfort whilst sitting on a gym ball - A LOT - she was admitted to birth suite with not long to go and birthed her beautiful daughter just the way nature intended her to. Gosh I want to scream this story from the rooftops. Not because she was LUCKY or that it was by chance - but because this is a story of a mother to be who knew her body and didn’t see herself in any other way than the woman who had birthed before her in her family tree. Let’s push for women to feel confident that we can expect to do well in this journey, no matter what shapes and sizes we arrive to pregnancy in. 👊🏼
Holidays over! Back to work for me - still enjoying the European climate and experiences but back to work to teach online more mums and dads in Western Australia 🇦🇺 here’s hoping the wifi connection in my hotel copes with WebEx!
Don’t miss out the chance to hear from this powerhouse of the Birth World
Holiday mode on 🇮🇹
Have you seen https://bmjopen.bmj.com/content/13/9/e071582 a brilliant research paper detailing what women want if they were to have a pregnancy labour or birth in the future. 39.2% would want to “be ready” next time. Happy to say that with this legend, my work wife mother of 5 and grandmother of 14…..we are offering a chance for our parents to “be ready” for advocacy, unexpected outcomes, forceps, vacuum births from an evidence informed place of choice and knowledge
Heartbreak 💔 although a Childbirth Educators Dream......4 hours to elevate the person in this class with the worry natural birth is impossible......I got you!
Coming up this week if anyone keen to join in and have your say.....
I've never been really good at social media. I enjoy looking at others posting but I seem to forget to do my own! My time just got a lot more precious....in the last month starting officially as a PhD student in the school of Nursing and Midwifery. Using all the pieces of my jigsaw professionally and academically to move what we know about emotional wellness on the journey to parenthood. Under the expert guidance of three fierce women Prof Karen Heslop, Dr Zoe Bradfield and Prof Helen Skouteris its going to be a fascinating yet exciting journey. Here's to doing better for our parents and their babies
Time off the treadmill today making use of a gift from a very special family I crossed paths with on their journey to parenthood in 2021. .marshall thank you again for your kindness look forward to seeing the next chapter unfold as 3 become 4 later this year 🩶
Such a vital question on the lips of any Educator.....how do we know we are providing the information our expectant families need? the topic of today! Sunday session underway!
Doing the Beyond part today out visiting a new mum for a birth debrief and conversation all about her wellness. Might even snuggle a little one 21 days new 💙
Working on Mothers Day.....brought my great-grandmothers cake to class today. Passed on through generations I feel the presence of Rebecca, Martha & Elizabeth Ann around me today as I work with another cohort of birthing families towards
Just leaving this here. 🤘
Today marks a special day in the calendar. Thinking of all the mothers who have loved, lost and longed for their children .org.au wonderful testimony to all these women
Surely one of the best days in a calendar year. Midwives. Those who have journeyed to pregnancy, through pregnancy and into parenting will have felt held, supported, safe and thankful these humans exist. Thank you the 5 midwives who supported me and my husband in our labours and births. I'm privileged to work alongside some of the best in my current employment and these women inspire me each shift I do. Special mention to one shining light to new mentors in this space where I hope to create something unique and transformative over the next 4 years. Thank you midwives. We would be lost without you all 🤘
A day in the life of a Childbirth Educator. Seeing my dream of teaching antenatal class to parents who have birthed before come to life. Stand out statement from the audience today "I felt lucky to have survived"
Online teaching tonight. Never underestimate the power in preparing birthing families for finding comfort in labour especially when that begins at home. My favourite line....."no answer is a wrong answer" really providing a space for families to appreciate labour and birth can look different to us all but the hormonal benefits of feeling safe and supported are influenced for us all by those things that are unique to us. A to Z. How many could you name? My favourites were TENS machine, Darkness and Counter Pressure. Drop your favourites into the comments. **nalbirth
For those of us working this weekend to keep delivering women centred care and education
Easter Blessings from my family to yours. Should your baby be making its way into your arms this weekend, I wish you a safe and healthy birth experience. If you are at term and wondering how to navigate these next 2 weeks in the "overdue" territory, remember if you are well and your baby is well, please ask
What are the BENEFITS of interventions to end pregnancy before labour begins?
What are the RISKS you want to be aware of?
What ALTERNATIVE options do you have?
What does your INTUITION tell you?
What happens if you say no?
Advocating for yourself, your baby and your birth is not to be forgotten about this Easter weekend when public holidays might change antenatal clinic appointments. Easter is not a medical reason for induction of labour! Enjoy the chocolate instead and let the oxytocin flow!
Day 3/3. A huge 3 days teaching in my hospital based role. Everything from birthing after caesarean, to active birth in hosptial yesterday and tonight online for those families who live rurally in the eastern parts of the metro area and prefer to learn from their sofa! I've so many highlights that I will get around to sharing but hitting 18 months working in the public hospital setting sure has expanded my teaching style and experience of educating towards a safe and healthy birth. Do the Job you love. But glad of a day off tomorrow to relax the vocal chords!
I'm a lover of this. have you downloaded your ? You won't regret it! Congratulations WA Country Health Service for this addition to those on the road from to
Happy International Woman's Day 2023 to all who identify as a woman. To all those preparing for never lose sight of your super power to grow life and give
Women supporting women in this space has never been more needed. Advocating for continues to be the Gold standard in maternity care we all continue to strive for. Until then, those working in this space, especially educators, we continue to provide for all to improve outcomes for our parents, their babies and their families
Pretty sure one thing we are all guilty of is not sharing the testimonials we receive as educators..
But opened the emails to this alert today. Lovely to think facilitating the opportunity for learning sill set this family up for a positive labour, birth and start to parenting **nalbirth
Doesn't it look overwhelming? The apprehensions collected from parents during education focussing on their decisions around or booking an Often the societal expectation is that induction of labour is just what happens routinely infact current Australian statistics show 1 in 2 first time mums are likely to bypass physiological labour and have an induction of labour. In my current scope of educating parents, offering a class dedicated to planning for the Unplanned events of pregnancy offers a chance to acknowledge these fears whilst providing evidence based education alongside a clinical midwife to make sure parents understand when medically induction is necessary but importantly when it is safe to decline by and making For me I believe this is a vital part in the preparing for a with parents who are caring for their newborn with good emotional health and well-being. DM me for more information if this post speaks to you **nalbirth
