Athletics Carnival
Our Athletics Carnival last Wednesday was another outstanding community day for the College. It was pleasing to see the effort of the girls and boys as they completed across all the athletic disciplines. Looking up to see empty stands as all students participated throughout the entire day was a testament to the positive spirit in which our community engaged in the day. I would like to thank Mrs Purdon for her organisation of the day and to all staff for their willingness to involve themselves with the competitive spirit of our students.

Last Friday, the staff of LaSalle Catholic College decided to ‘pay it forward’. Paying it forward or giving it back to the community is something all of us should be thinking about; particularly when we see our neighbours living without the security of their own homes. As our Lord taught in many Gospel stories. “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down ones life for ones friends.” - John 15:13.
So, what did we do? To begin the day the staff were presented with some startling facts and stories from St Vinnies representative, Josie. Together we discussed the number of ways someone can fall into the plight of homelessness and hungriness. The stories humbled us in many ways and we were so moved to compassion and a deep desire to help others. After sharing Mass together celebrated by Father Van, we then spent the remainder of the day in numerous fashions. Some staff members spent the mid-morning in the kitchens creating soups and banana bread for dinner later that night. Others made 1000s of sandwiches to be distributed with the bowls of soups. Others made snack packs, created beautiful birthday or get-well cards. Others still knitted scarves for the chilling winter ahead and others packed toiletries and other necessities for the Vinnies Van that evening. It was a feeling of camaraderie that will never be forgotten.
It was tiring work, but so very, very rewarding. I do not think there was a staff member who didn’t feel that this was one of the better days of their lives … giving to the last, the lost and the least. As the bible writes in Hebrews 13:16: “do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” Or in Luke 6:30: “Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back.” So, I finish here, knowing that I, and many of the staff and students, will continue this act of paying it forward “No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another.”

VET CONSTRUCTION CONCRETE POUR

On Wednesday 22 May the Year 12 Construction Specialisation class participated in a concrete pour which is a part of the Certificate II Construction Course.

The area that was prepared for this pour was at the Meredith Street end of the College. It is to make a new pathway at the gate entrance that was installed for students, improving access to the College for students and improving open and closing procedures for staff.

This class is made up of Construction students from neighbouring Colleges, as well as LaSalle College students. The group displayed great teamwork, cohesion and camaraderie in completing this task. This reflects well for the group and their transition into companies with hugely diverse working groups, performing their work on commercial work sites.

The focus for this mandatory activity was purely to test and develop basic concreting practices such as site preparation, formwork, installing metal reinforcement, moving volumes of wet concrete mix, screeding the wet concrete, removing all air, surface finish and then final edging. Once the concrete was set the students took great delight in exposing their handiwork by dismantling the formwork.

Students were blessed with brilliant sunny weather and dry conditions. The Year 12 students appeared satisfied with their wholehearted efforts. Special ‘Shout Out’ to Marvyn Chidiac who assisted his father with the making and installing of a new fence and gate for that area and to Mr Faber for leadership, supervision and guidance of a job well done. Also special mention to Michael Hawach, Brendan Kennedy, Steve Mulligan & Danielle Gauci for their great ‘LaSallian’ team work, collaboration and initiative in the background to ensure a smooth delivery. Well done Team!

Open Day 2024
The College Open Day was held this year on Wednesday 6 March from 3.30pm - 5.30pm. It was another great afternoon for the College and a pleasure to see all the Parents and young students come to see what we have on offer at our great College.

2024 College Swimming Carnival. Whilst there were many
good performances throughout the day, the highlight was the great participation and sense of spirit amongst the students. It was so pleasing to see our girls and boys, young and old, work together showing pride in their Houses and school.
