"Telling stories about pasts - who we are, where we come from - is a way of orienting ourselves in the present and imagining and enacting a collective future. What gets remembered and what gets forgotten, who gets to speak and who gets heard: these questions are connected to the way our communities are constituted and to the possibility of a shared and flourishing life in this country."

"Politicians on both sides will need to take into account the impact of a potential ban among TikTok supporters, as well as the Chinese-Australian community. Many Chinese-Australians would see a ban as yet another slap in the face to their country of origin and further evidence of anti-China foreign policy."
Writing for The Conversation Australia + NZ, Associate Professor Marina Zhang and Professor Wanning Sun of the UTS Australia-China Relations Institute, discuss recent attempts to ban TikTok - owned by Beijing-based tech giant ByteDance - by American politicians, and how this puts Australia in a tense position between the United States and China.
What happens if TikTok is banned? If TikTok is banned in the US or Australia, how might the company – or China – respond?
