Thank you to Dr Sadaf Warraich of Motor Neurone Disease NSW for giving us an overview of MND. Dr Warraich also shared a sneak peek of her important research investigating the possible causes of this condition.

Our thanks to Mark Keaton for sharing his experience about living with cerebral palsy, and his advocacy in PDRL (Physical Disability Rugby League) and beyond.

Helping the community is simply BAU (business as usual) for many of our organisations, however, today was a special opportunity to roll up our sleeves at Foodbank NSW & ACT to make an impact *beyond* our business 💫

Our location on 278 Macquarie St in Liverpool NSW will be temporarily closed from Monday, 2 September to make way for something very exciting!

Afea staff who are based in the Liverpool office will begin working permanently in our head office in Parramatta.

Is your NDIS provider registered? 🤔

Early this month, the NDIS Provider and Worker Registration Taskforce released its report to the public.

The Taskforce gave 11 recommendations, including:

🏡 All providers of Supported Independent Living (SIL) and Home and Living supports should be registered within the next 12 months

✍️ A registration model with 4 types of registration based on risk: Advanced, General, Service for One/Self Directed Support and Basic

🚪🚶‍♀️ The NDIS Commission should have the right to enter Group Homes for unannounced visits

🙋‍♂️Establishment of a Worker Registration Scheme

Brain Injury Awareness Week (19 to 25 August) is a time to reflect on how we can better support the 1 in 45 Aussies living with a brain injury.

Disabilities related to ABI or acquired brain injury tend to be complex - people with an ABI experience challenges to the way they think, learn and react.

This leads to struggles with making connections with others.

The fees and processes for the NDIS Worker Screening Check vary across states and territories 💡

For example:
🙋 In NSW, you’ll need to visit a service centre in person
🙅‍♂️ Victoria is taking a ‘no clearance, no start’ approach to the NDIS Check
✍️ In Queensland, you need a customer reference number (CRN) before you can apply for the check ️

The good news: the check is transferable to other NDIS employers in whatever role across Australia. You don’t need to re-apply if you travel or move interstate!

This appointed decision-maker is called a guardian.
