Brain Injury Awareness Week (19 to 25 August) is a time to reflect on how we can better support the 1 in 45 Aussies living with a brain injury.

Disabilities related to ABI or acquired brain injury tend to be complex - people with an ABI experience challenges to the way they think, learn and react.

This leads to struggles with making connections with others.

Help is available. Learn more about ABI in our post 🧠 https://afea.com.au/what-is-an-acquired-brain-injury/

What's it like living with a brain injury?

Acquired brain injury or ABI refers to any damage to the brain that occurs after birth, rather than as part of a genetic or congenital disorder 🧠

Ahead of Brain Injury Awareness Week , we share these words from an NDIS participant who is living with the condition. We hope their experience can inspire us all to be more patient and compassionate.

Join us in raising awareness about ABI. Do you have a story you want to tell? Share in the comments.

What a night of meaningful connections and conversations!

Many thanks to the India Australia Business & Community Alliance (IABCA) for hosting us alongside fellow global IABCA Awards finalists ✨

Afea Care Services and our leaders Esha Oberoi (Founder and Co-CEO) and Gaurav Oberoi (Co-CEO) are up for three awards, including the award for Community Services Excellence πŸ†

Congratulations are also in order for our EAP partner Leora, finalist for Excellence in Innovation πŸ‘

We were welcomed at the NSW Parliament Theatrette by Premier of NSW, Hon Chris Minns MP; NSW Treasurer, Hon Daniel Mookhey MLC and IABCA Founder Sonia Sadiq Gandhi.

Any cricket fans here? 🏏The event also featured the official launch of the Summer of Cricket with IABCA Partner Cricket Australia, headed by CEO Nick Hockley.

IABCA plays a vital role in fostering Australia’s bilateral relationship with India. This year's awards received 400 nominations from diverse sectors!

We're honoured to be recognised for our compassionate care and outstanding leadership πŸ™ Looking forward to awards night this week!

The fees and processes for the NDIS Worker Screening Check vary across states and territories πŸ’‘

For example:
πŸ™‹ In NSW, you’ll need to visit a service centre in person
πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ Victoria is taking a β€˜no clearance, no start’ approach to the NDIS Check
✍️ In Queensland, you need a customer reference number (CRN) before you can apply for the check ️

The good news: the check is transferable to other NDIS employers in whatever role across Australia. You don’t need to re-apply if you travel or move interstate!

Have a look at our guide πŸ”— https://afea.com.au/ndis-workers-screening-check-how-to-apply/

With compassionate support workers from Afea, NDIS participants can keep their homes neat, tidy and welcoming!

Need support at home? Call us on 1300 65 11 33.

[Image description: Stylised Q&A text. Can participants use their NDIS funding for domestic assistance? Yes! Participants can access this support through their β€˜Core’ budget. Depending on their needs, they can have a support worker perform household chores that they can’t do themselves, or the support worker can assist them so they can build their capacity.]

Most of the people we support can make decisions on their own πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈBut sometimes, an older person or a person living with disability needs someone else to make decisions on their behalf.

This appointed decision-maker is called a guardian.

A guardian can be:

✍️️ an Enduring Guardian
✍️ a Private Guardian
✍️ the Public Guardian ('guardian of last resort')

How do they differ from one another? Find out more in our post πŸ”— https://afea.com.au/what-is-a-guardian/
