πŸ•οΈ Gateway's Inaugural Challenge Day: Where Innovation and Teamwork Thrived! 🌟

On Tuesday, September 12th, Gateway hosted its first-ever "Challenge Day"! πŸ™Œ Our Year 9 students embarked on a thrilling adventure that tested their creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.

In small groups, they were tasked with an exciting mission: build a shelter using a limited budget and resources right here on our campus. 🏠🧰

The day kicked off with spirited planning sessions, where each group mapped out their shelter design and meticulously calculated the materials needed. Then, they hit local shops, armed with enthusiasm and budgets, to purchase essential resources like tarps and poles. πŸ›’πŸ’‘

Once back at school, the clock started ticking. With just 45 minutes on the clock, our budding architects and engineers set to work, constructing their shelters from the ground up. πŸ•’πŸ”¨

The ultimate test came as teachers evaluated their creations for strength, size, and durability, employing water guns and nerf guns to challenge their mettle. πŸ”«

But it wasn't just about the shelters, it was about teamwork, innovation, and creative problem-solving. 🀝🧠

In the end, the champions emerged, crowned not only for their shelter's prowess but also their incredible teamwork. They walked away with a trophy handcrafted by our Head of Campus! πŸ†πŸ‘

Challenge Day was more than just an activity; it was a celebration of our Year 9 students' creativity, collaboration, and resilience. We couldn't be prouder of their achievements in 2023 so far! πŸ’™

πŸš— Empowering Our Future Drivers! πŸ›£οΈ

Last Thursday, our Year 10 students embarked on an eye-opening journey into road safety with RYDA. πŸš—

The day was packed with insights and inspiration as our students immersed themselves in five dynamic workshops, each a valuable piece of the road safety puzzle. 🧩🚦

From understanding the importance of personal responsibility behind the wheel to unraveling the intricate world of safety features within vehicles, our students absorbed crucial knowledge to become safe, responsible road users. πŸ’‘

But the day held something even more impactful – the opportunity to listen to a real-life survivor of a car crash. Their story served as a powerful reminder of the significance of safe driving practices. πŸ™β€οΈ

Learning outside the classroom is a special experience, and it was heartening to see our students embrace this opportunity to expand their road safety awareness. 🏫🌐

As they continue to grow and learn, we're confident that our Year 10 students are on the path to becoming informed, responsible, and safe users of our roads. πŸŒŸπŸ›£οΈ

One student took it to the next level by crafting a special GCH Gnome!

Creativity knows no bounds at Gateway, and we're thrilled to see our students unleashing their artistic spirits. 🌟🎨

Stay tuned for more Wellbeing Wednesdays as we continue to Achieve, Belong and Grow together. πŸ“šπŸ€

Our recent Wear it Purple Day was a resounding success, radiating positivity and unity throughout our school. 🌟

Our incredible students assisted in organising and hosting a heartwarming morning tea that promoted the values of diversity and inclusion. 🍡🍰

In the spirit of empowerment and support for the LGBTIQA+ community, some students delivered powerful speeches that underscored the significance of equality. πŸ—£οΈ They shared their thoughts on creating a safe and nurturing environment where everyone can be their authentic selves, free from discrimination and prejudice. 🌍❀️

Being part of such an inclusive and compassionate school community is truly heartwarming. 🏫❀️

At Gateway Community High, we stand together, embracing diversity, and celebrating individuality. 🌈 Let's continue to create a world where acceptance and love shine brighter than ever. πŸŒŸπŸ€—

🌟 Wellbeing Wednesdays at Gateway Community High 🌟

Our recent session saw students learning to prepare a range of food and snacks whilst having a blast. πŸ½οΈπŸš€

These activities have been extremely fun and informative for our students, teaching them to read recipes and helping them develop food preparation skills. Beyond the kitchen, these activities are about nurturing life skills and embracing the joy of learning. πŸ“šπŸ³

Even students who didn't partake directly enjoyed the perks of these delicious creations.😝

🌿 Nurturing Friendships with Wellbeing Wednesday! 🌱

As part of our Wellbeing Wednesday program, a group of enthusiastic students kicked off a rewarding project today by planting new greens in our fresh outdoor courtyard. 🌳✨

We're aiming to transform the couryard into a more welcoming, appealing and vegetated space for all. With this project just getting started we're excited to roll up our sleeves and rebuild our veggie garden too. πŸ…πŸ₯•

Beyond the soil and seeds, this activity was a wonderful opportunity for our students to grow, giving them the chance to collaborate and work with different peers and blossom stronger friendships.

Gateway Community High Students Embrace the Spirit of NAIDOC Week with Cultural Exploration! 🌟

This week Gateway Community High students had the amazing opportunity to learn about First Nations cultures as a part of NAIDOC Week.

Through art our students uncovered the diverse cultures and histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Led by Theresa Ardler, who is a Gweagal Aboriginal woman of the Eora region in Sydney, our students engaged in creating indigenous inspired art and drawing.

It was great to see our students express their creativity, while also developing a profound respect and understanding for the significance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander traditions. The joy and pride reflected in their creations were a testament to their appreciation for the diverse stories that shape our nation. 🎨✨

We are once again proud of our Gateway students for their active participation, enthusiasm, and commitment to cultural awareness and respect. Their engagement during NAIDOC Week showcases their growth as individuals and their ongoing dedication to celebrating diversity within our school community and beyond.

Check out the Incredible Brain Break Dance at Gateway Community High! πŸ•ΊπŸ’ƒ

To improve and enhance our learning environment, we have adopted the Berry Street Education Model to further support student engagement and wellbeing.

As a part of this adoption, some of our teachers have integrated quick brain breaks into every lesson. These breaks re-energise and refocus our students, ensuring they stay motivated and actively participate in their learning journey. 🧠πŸ’ͺ

Our amazing talented students were recently captured showcasing their dance moves during a lively 'Brain Break' session.

We love sharing our fun and energetic learning environment at Gateway Community High School, striving to create a learning atmosphere that nurtures both academic growth and personal development.

πŸ“Έ What an exciting year so far at Gateway Community High! During Term 1 our students enjoyed some fabulous activities and excursions. Here are some of our favourites:

βœ…Harmony Week on March 21 saw our students come together, share stories and embrace the richness of our diversity. Students are encouraged to demonstrate the core values shared by Gateway and Harmony Day including Respect & Relationships, Diversity & Inclusion, Belonging and Empowerment. 🌏🀝🏽

βœ…Curriculum Excursion on April 5 gave our students the opportunity to visit the ANZAC Memorial and the Australian Museum. The trip kickstarted their Term 2 History and Science curriculum, featuring '20 lives through 20 objects' workshops with a focus on students' interests such as minerals and dinosaurs. The excursion was a great success, with impressive contributions made by the students. πŸ›οΈπŸ¦–

βœ…Wellbeing Excursion on April 6 was an amazing day for our students. The activities were shifted back to our campus due to the weather. The day featured a trivia competition, tug-of-war, informal check-ins, awards, and a delicious barbecue. Students had a wellbeing session, followed by an Easter Egg hunt and a student vs. staff Oztag game at Cox's Park. The day ended with heartfelt speeches and celebrations for Nicole's last day at Gateway Community High. πŸŽ‰πŸ₯š

Gateway Community High students have experienced a 32% increase in self-worth after one year of attending the school, according to the recently released Huber Social Impact report.

β€œI highly recommend Gateway to anyone looking for alternative education. It was a relief for us to see our son Josh smiling again,” said Deborah, one of the parents of its inaugural Year 10 graduating class.

Soon after arriving at the school Josh was thriving in the different learning environment. Josh, now 17, was awarded his Year 10 ROSA last year and is now on track to complete his HSC. In addition, he was awarded the Long Tan Leadership Award, presented, and sponsored by the Australian Defence Force, a significant personal achievement for Josh.
