May 5th is known as Red Dress Day, remembering missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls who have been victims of violence. Gender-based violence has a disproportionate impact on Indigenous women and girls in Canada. While Indigenous women constitute about 5% of all women in Canada, they accounted for 21% of all women killed by an intimate partner between 2014 and 2019. We need to continue to advocate for change so that everyone feels safe from violence.

We are delighted to invite members and their guests to our annual AGM with guest speaker, Steve Paiken. Enjoy socializing with old and new friends and renew your membership. Please RSVP to [email protected]

On Wednesday April 24th, we were treated to a very informative talk on the uses of AI as it pertains to research, in particular drug research. Many thanks to Dr. Christian Battista for simplifying for us what goes into drug research and how this fascinating new technologhy has the potential to give better results faster.

From research, to development, then clinical trials and finally to governmental approval, means that introducing new drugs and therapies can take years. What role can AI play in accelerating the process? Join us for this interesting and important presentation.

Happy International Women’s Day!

International Women’s Day (IWD) is a day to celebrate women in all of their diversity and the enormous strides we’ve made in the movement to achieve gender equality. It’s an opportunity to honour the strength and resilience of the women who have touched our lives—our sisters, mothers, grandmothers, friends, teachers, fellow CFUW members, and role models.

"Advocacy is responsible for many things we now take for
granted such as universal medicare in Canada, women's voting
rights, matrimonial property rights and paid maternity leave.
Advocacy is a core function of CFUW and it is at the heart of
the mission and vision of CFUW. Sharing our mission is
fundamental to our success." - Advocacy in CFUW

The Arts Appreciation Interest Group enjoyed a visit to McMaster Museum of Art this week. Pictured are two excellent exhibits - one a wonderful collection of Haudenosaunee art, artifacts and historical documents and the second, the colourful and futuristic art of Ranji Perera, who references her Sri Lankan heritage.

January’s SDG of the Month is Goal 5: “Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.”

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are 17 ambitious goals for the world to reach by 2030—a blueprint for achieving an equitable, peaceful, and sustainable future for everyone.

Targets for Goal 5 include ending discrimination, eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls, recognizing the value of unpaid care and domestic work, ensuring women’s full participation in decision-making, and ensuring universal access to sexual and reproductive health.

Progress made on Goal 5: “The world is not on track to achieve gender equality by 2030. At the global level, none of the 18 indicators “met or almost met” the targets and only one is “close to target”. At the current rate of progress, it is estimated that it will take up to 286 years to close gaps in legal protection and remove discriminatory laws, 140 years for women to be represented equally in positions of power and leadership in the workplace, and 47 years to achieve equal representation in national parliaments” (United Nations).

Charles Levkoe's community engaged research uses a food systems lens to better understand the importance of, and connections between social justice, ecological regeneration, regional economies and active democratic engagement. (https://foodsystems.lakeheadu.ca/charles-z-levkoe/).
In the recent essay entitled "Basic income could help create a more just and sustainable food system" published in the April 20/23 online periodical The Conversation, Dr. Levkoe and his co author, Kristen Lowitt, discuss the importance of eliminating the uncertainty in household income in order to reduce food insecurity in families. This is a presentation you shouldn’t miss!
