The Origami Yogis
Christie Koppe and Tira Mills
Katonah Yoga® Certified Instructors
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
Katonah Yoga is a beautiful mix between the mystical and the practical. The Origami Yogis use a heavy esoteric dialogue to keep the imagination going and pair that with a very practical asana practice. The practice is based off of Taoist philosophy and traditional Chinese medicine, along with mathematics, geometry, measure and magic.
There are some big changes coming up for The Origami Yogis. First off, Tira is going to be stepping away to make a move to British Columbia with her partner. Second, Christie is planning to carry forward with classes and will be moving them to the beautiful Inner Five Studios on Whyte Ave.
The last class with The Origami Yogis at the Strathearn Hall is on January 11, 2023.
Please note- we will be refunding the monetary value of any unused class passes after The Origami Yogis final class in mid-January.

Living in tune with the seasons means understanding the patterns of great nature and refining our lifestyle to match.
Autumn is a time for building up the strength of the Lungs and the Large Intestine, thus working with the breath and the concept of letting go. The trees lose their leaves just as we must shed ourselves of anything unneeded to get us through winter.
Join us to work through this season of transition as we move out of the communal summer and into the personal winter.

Twists bring about space for the Lungs to move forward and become more available.
꩜ When twisting to the LEFT, one moves through the energy of the heart and the home (our emotions).
꩜ When twisting to the RIGHT, one opens up to the world and skill development through occupation and education (our work).
꩜ After going both ways, one is tapped into both left, right, and CENTER, thus braiding together the narrative thread of life!
Join us Thursdays from 7-8pm every week!

When we imagine the polarity of above and below, we can draw a line through our central axis from the crown of the head to the perineum. This channel is where we start from and what we spin around in twists. By mediating the two polarities and pulling the crown of the head forward while pulling the hips back, one can optimize space.
Yoga brings the opportunity to create trinity within polarities by putting yourself in the center. Learn more about accessing more opportunities within your life with a Katonah Yoga practice.

Time for Spring Cleaning!
We love to reference the body as a house. Yoga is like house cleaning for the personal abode. It is how you can open your windows, air out your house, flush the pipes, and dust out the nooks and crannies that you don’t normally visit. Join us for your own personal spring cleaning, harnessing the full potential of the season to lead into a summer that is ripe and bountiful!
Stay tuned for more details about our upcoming pass sale!
We are honoured to have been asked to participate in a filming project for a local student from MacEwan university!
Part of the project will include footage of us in action teaching a class.
You are invited to attend this class (for free!), but know that the footage will be used for the project. We will also be using the final project as marketing material.
The class will look like our regular class, with lots of props, dialogue and hands on adjustments. The only difference is we will have Emily and Robert filming the entire class to use parts of the footage in the final cut!
This is a free and fun opportunity, but please do not feel obligated to join if this just isn’t up your alley.
Space it limited, so please message us if you’d like to join!
Registration deadline April 7th, 2023.

Hi! Welcome to all the new folks following our page. We wanted to introduce ourselves and let you know about the Katonah Yoga offerings we have in Edmonton, AB.
Our Story:
Christie and Tira met initially in their Katonah Yoga teacher training in 2017 and have been weaving their narrative thread together ever since. Their passion for Katonah Yoga has given them the opportunity to explore themselves through yoga and work with each other through community to help one another grow as a practitioner and as a teacher.
Since their initial training they have travelled together to New York state on multiple occasions to train and study with Nevine Michaan, creator of Katonah Yoga and her fellow master teachers.
Their passion and curiosity for yoga allows them to continuously explore the practice in themselves and each other. Their kindred spirits create a warm, fun and safe environment, where students can come to their mats to refine, reform and transform their practice in a welcoming setting.
They use yoga to fold the body like origami folds paper. Matching up the bodies corners and edges to ensure well measured postures that fit and have function.
Join us Tuesdays 12pm (ORGANIZE: foundations class), Thursdays 7pm (RESTORE: restorative class), and occasional Saturdays 11am (IGNITE: fiery class).

What is Katonah Yoga?
Katonah Yoga is a syncretic Hatha yoga practice developed by Nevine Michaan over 45 years. She and her teachers incorporate classical Hatha yoga with Taoist theory, geometry, magic, mythology, metaphor, and imagination – in a practical framework designed to potentiate personal and communal well-being. Framing the practice, maps of time and personal space are defined and refined. Themes using asana as origami, manipulating form for function, and developing a sense of personal measure are incorporated in Katonah Yoga® practices.
Katonah Yoga is organized around three principles of esoteric dialogue: all polarities are mediated by trinity; the universe has pattern, pattern belies intelligence; by virtue of repetition there is potential for insights. Disciplined techniques are organized for revelation through revolutions.
Practicing in community not only brings a fun and energetic perspective to your practice, but it also brings the opportunity for insightful hands-on adjustments. Pigeon pose brings us down into the lower body, but not only for the sake of going deep. The reason we go deep is to eventually rise up and out of our own personal patterns and habits.
The Origami Yogis offer uplifting adjustments to give you a glimpse of a higher vision, a new perspective, and ultimately empowering you to see the full picture and become more well-rounded.
Join us weekly Tuesdays 12pm and Thursdays 7pm, with occasional Saturday classes 11am. More info at link in bio!

Katonah Yoga utilizes many props to elevate a yoga practice. Here is an example of a supported frog pose, with blocks under the armpits and forehead, blankets behind the legs, and a sandbag on the sacrum. These props provide the scaffolding to better sustain the posture while giving the practitioner a moment to feel held and supported.
The Origami Yogis also offer many hands-on adjustments to add connection and direction to each posture. The personalized attention provides information on where you may be falling into old habits during your yoga practice, and ideas on how to redirect yourself with grace.
Join us every Thursday from 7-8pm at The Strathean Community Hall! Link in bio for more information.
We unfortunately had a double booking at the hall on January 19, so will not be hosting our weekly yoga class that day.

In class, we talk a lot about backbends. Backbends give rise to opportunity, they open up the front body to the potential that lies ahead, and develop more space for the lungs to pump.
Some people find they get stuck in the mid-back/ thoracic area and are unable to fully extend their backbend. To access this area, one must learn to open up the front body and create space for the lungs to come forward and up.
We are here to have your back as you work to open up the front body and develop your backbend. Hands-on adjustments allow you to have a sense of where to focus in the posture to gradually find more space in the body.
Interested in learning how to level up your backbend? Join us every Thursday 7-8pm for Katonah Yoga. Link in bio for more info.
To fold in on oneself is to find safety in the contact between one's ability and one's stability. The relationship between the torso and the legs is the connection of "doing" (i.e. ability) and "being" (i.e. stability), respectively. Learning to fold in on oneself provides insight into how to modulate between "being" and "doing", thus giving great power to the practitioner!
You are already fully equipt to find your fits and folds within the body to harmonize upper and lower, but having a helping hand is a great way to expedite this process.
Learn to fold, reform, and transform your practice with The Origami Yogis every Thursday 7-8pm at Strathearn Community Hall. Link in bio for more info!
