Let's Go Ziplining! -
Let's Go Ziplining! Join other Breast Cancer survivors and see what your body can do! Soar and climb through the trees, getting fresh air and exercise with other great women. Whether you would like to do beginner courses, or more advanced, or just cheer on others, why don’t you join us!
Physiotherapists are direct-access practitioners, meaning patients can visit physiotherapists directly (self-referral) without waiting for a physician’s referral. Physiotherapy self-referral benefits both patients and the healthcare system!
Benefits include:
-Timely access to care can lead to faster diagnosis and treatment
-Improved health outcomes since early intervention and treatment can result in better outcomes, especially for conditions that require immediate attention
-Better patient satisfaction
-Reduced time loss for additional appointments
-Reduced volume of referrals to specialists
-Self-referred patients miss less work
-Self-referred patients use less prescription drugs and have fewer x-rays and require fewer visits to their physician
-Reduced health care cost overall
Most private insurance plans in Nova Scotia do not require a doctor’s referral to access our services. Check your plan to confirm what your coverage requires and then book your physio appointment.

Let's Get Active! -
Let's Get Active! Let’s try this again, now that the weather is a bit better! We were snowed out in February, but the weather is looking better and better now.
Starting in early Spring, physiotherapists in Nova Scotia will be able to order X-rays. This will make getting results more timely so we can treat more appropriately. What a great advancement for our industry!
Starting in early Spring, all qualified physiotherapists in Nova Scotia (including those working in private practice), will be able to refer patients for x-rays.
www.nshealth.ca/news-and-notices/physiotherapists-across-nova-scotia-will-soon-be-able-request-x-rays
“This announcement will optimize the scope of practice for Nova Scotia physiotherapists who work in private practice and as a result, improve timely access for patients needing general radiography,” says Monica MacDonald, President of the Nova Scotia Physiotherapy Association. “It will save patients from unnecessary additional appointments to get a requisition if an x-ray is deemed necessary. We are excited to better support our patients and help them efficiently navigate the healthcare system.”
It is encouraging to see reductions in system barriers that will expedite diagnosis and treatment, in turn leading to improved outcomes for patients.
Physiotherapists working to their full scope of practice are able to help alleviate the strain on our healthcare system.
Come get active with other breast cancer survivors!
I’m planning monthly events to get together with other breast cancer survivors and do some activities that we all enjoy. Walking, hiking, snowshoeing, ziplining, kayaking, canoeing, axe throwing, and breaking things at the Rage Room, will all be on the menu this year. Participate at the level you want to.
You can be a beginner or an expert, but come willing to have fun!
There is no charge for these events, except for the venue’s fees (if any). You must register for each event so we know you’re coming (see below for contact information)!
The first event will be a walk/hike or snowshoeing (if there is good snow).
Saturday, February 3rd at 9:00
Uniacke Estate Museum Park in Mount Uniacke
You will need to bring snowshoes if there is good snow.
We can also arrange to carpool, as parking may limited.

It's always tough to focus on yourself during the holidays, but it's important to make sure you're following some healthy practices so you can be there for yourself and others. Eat well, get plenty of sleep, get a little exercise, and enjoy yourself!
Holidays and Health The holidays are where we often focus on others, and less on ourselves. Family stress, money stress, and things like travel, shopping, cooking, eating heavier meals, and eating more sugar and alcohol, can all take a toll on our health and well-being during the holidays. LUMBAR FLEXION IS NOT BAD.
Reposted this many times already, still important topic:
"Is this movement bad for your back?⠀
Can this damage your discs?⠀
⠀
No.. 😊⠀
A lot of physiotherapists, doctors, orthopedic surgeons, and the general public have to change their beliefs about the spine.⠀
⠀
People with degenerative discs have been told that they can’t bend their back, lift heavy and do manual work.⠀
⠀
There are a lot of examples of people who have gone back to doing the very things they’re being told they can’t do.⠀
There is a lot of fear about the structure of the spine.⠀
They have been told to be careful with their backs and have the fear to do harm.⠀
⠀
We know that fear is a huge driver of abnormal pain behavior.⠀
⠀
A shift in beliefs has to happen within the medical, physiotherapy profession and in the general public.⠀
⠀
We can trust our back and shouldn't be feared. It is a robust, strong structure.⠀
Often with disabling back pain, the motor systems are overactive, hypersensitive. The muscles are guarding the back too much.⠀
That can be driven by habits of movements, habits of posture, fear, anxiety, stress, or just the presence of pain and you developed a protective guarding response.
⠀
Btw, this movement could, of course, be harmful when you suddenly lift 150 kilos from the ground and you are not trained for it. You could injure your tissues, similar to what happens with an ankle sprain. Besides that, tissues can be progressively loaded and can adapt and become stronger.⠀
⠀
Share this post with all your colleagues, doctors, and other health care professionals.. Everybody should see this! 😊👍"
Cognitive Functional Therapy can help with fear avoidance and fear of bending the spine. We will have a CFT course coming up with Kieran O'Sullivan on June 10 and June 24. You can find more information about this course in the link below 🤓👍 Recordings will be available.

Did you know that physiotherapists provide primary health care?
This means that we diagnose and treat acute and chronic conditions within our scope of practice, manage patients with chronic disease, provide education in disease self-management, participate in health promotion and injury prevention initiatives, and much more. We also collaborate with other health care professionals to set and achieve identified treatment goals for patients.
We have positive impacts on quality of life and care cost-effectiveness by:
+ Providing early assessment and intervention
+ Improving exercise tolerance and helping maintain or restore optimal function
+ Assisting in the prevention and treatment of pain
+ Promoting fitness, health, and wellness
+ Improving client satisfaction in care, including education and guidance on maintenance or improvement in overall function
