I’m adding more 50+ Group Training Classes.
It’s been almost 2 years since I started a 50+ Training Group . Monday & Thursday 9am & 10am are all full and I am looking to expand my offerings.
Here is what it will look like:
- 10am Monday & Friday (must commit to 2x per week for the month)
- Class size of 6 or less
- Class structure = warm up, 35 minutes strength training, 8-12 minute circuit at the end
- All exercises are scaled to the ability of the individual
- Start date TBD

It’s not just the time on court or the gym. It’s the time in your head thinking about how to be better, problem solving, learning the game, growing as an athlete. he was googling how to play in a warm court between matching and how to play against a long limbed left handed player. His preparation was masterful.
I can honestly say I’ve never been more proud of a friend. I’ve seen him working hard on this for 10 years. I know how much time and effort he’s put in. This is an incredible accomplishment!

This was such a satisfying email to read.
This client had been absent from group fitness for 2 months. Today, despite some anxiety, she decided to come back. She told me how she felt right after she came through the door. I said no problem and modified the workout for her. I made sure to keep a close eye on her and cue/encourage when I felt it was needed. 8 hours later I open my email and see this.
I think this is worth sharing because not everyone does feel comfortable in a gym. And that sucks! Because everyone should. So encourage those around you and celebrate those and take a leap in the pursuit of a greater quality of life.
And for the record her sarcasm has me bursting out in laughter at least once a session. I love it.

This was a moment that made me smile today.
Here are 2 members of Seniors Group Fitness who are also partners learning to squat together, in their 80’s. Group B had a couple people away today so it was just us 3.
I couldn’t help but think about A) how adorable it is watching this old couple workout together, 😎 if they keep coming to the class 2 days per week the health benefits will be enormous compared to doing nothing, C) I wish there was more awareness and accessibility for exercise for seniors.

Nothing like some Cyndi Lauper (+ other 80’s hits) and a workout on a holiday Monday. The strongest 55+ ladies I know, putting in some work this morning.
Almost two months into the Seniors Class and we are seeing some gains.
Everyone is deadlifting off the floor, squatting near parallel, doing push ups at a higher difficulty, and overall have more work capacity. And equally as important, there is a sense of community, comradery, and everyone is having fun.
The video on the left was a lifetime PR with no straps. The weight moved quite well. I’d say it looked like an RPE 8.5/10 (rate of perceived exertion = how hard did it feel?). This was November of last year.
We put the deadlift on the back burner for 4.5 months and used our weekly session to focus on the back squat. He was still deadlifting at home once a week, but not at high intensities.
Today marked 6 weeks into deadlift as the focus of our weekly session. The video on the right is the same weight as the left, but with a 1ct pause off the floor. To me, it looks like the same, or a lower RPE. The straps were only used because of a minor wrist injury from sports. As anyone who has used straps knows they do make it easier, which goes against my point.
However, I think context is important here. Christmas break falls in this time period, other activities got added into weekly training volume as things opened up around the province, there was a week or so off in there.
The point is it’s not all about the amount of weight on the bar.
Here are some examples of progress in maximal strength that aren’t more weight on the bar:
- Lifting the same weight with a pause added
- Lifting the same weight with a lower RPE (how hard it feels)
- Lifting the same weight for more reps or more sets within the same session
- Lifting the same weight with bands or chains to add resistance
- Lifting the same weight without straps

First time doing these as a primary exercise. Feeling strong from the blocks. If I do some work of the floor after this block 440-450 is there.

These is harder than it was 4 weeks ago. I need to eat more. I’ve lost a bit of weight and it’s noticeable on the bench.

I’ve switched from my Nike Weightlifting Shoes (Romaleos 4’s) back to Met Con’s. I couldn’t get my bar path straightened out (coming forward in the bottom). I’m amazing how much more I feel the floor.
Accessory work tomorrow. 🌞 and relax the rest of the weekend!
A lot of my clients don’t have specific athletic goals. They just want to be healthier and be more active outside of work.
Sometimes I get asked what a workout like that might look like. So here’s a reel! I’m new to the reel game, go easy on me.
You might be shocked to know that what you do for exercise matters way less than being consistent. It's very easy to get caught in the trap of trying to make the perfect plan. The end result is often a plan that is impossible to stick to, or, not doing anything because it feels like you don't know what the perfect thing to do is.
So what should you do?

…. It doesn’t really matter. Just start and don’t stop!

SENIORS GROUP FITNESS
Classes will run 2x per week (Monday & Thursday @ 10am).
The class will focus on building strength and mobility with safe and effective exercises for older adults. All fitness levels are welcome. No prior strength training experience required.
Each class is limited to 6 people. Sessions will run 2x per week from start of month the end of month (some sessions will more total sessions than others depending on length of month).
First session will run from Monday March 28th to Thursday April 28th.

On my social media I post a lot of videos on my younger clients (30-40) despite the face the average age of my clientele is late 50's. I have 2 clients over 70 I have trained for 5+ years and a couple clients in their 60's.
You are never too old to start strength training. It's only a matter of finding your starting point and progressing slowly with safety being the number one priority.
Here is a client in her late 60's I have been training for 5+ years.

Incline Bench Reverse Fly x near technical fatigue (0.5KG's)
Her workout today consisted of a 5 minute warm up on the Row Erg and four round of these exercises. Started lighter on the deadlift and built up to her top set of 105. On the incline push ups we started with a slower tempo and partial range of motion to make sure she was feeling warmed up.
In the New Year I plan to start some Small Group Fitness classes for 60+ years of age. Exercise for older adults is so critical for helping them maintain their quality of life. More details to come soon. Doing a charity/fundraiser Row Erg event in 2 weekends. Should probably spend a little time on the rower. With a partner () we need to complete 12k in under 50 minutes.
3km training session down. Kept my eyes closed for the first 3 songs (2.3km) so I couldn’t see the distance … and that worked well. Not disappointed with that time. Hoping for sub 44 minutes as a team.

Next year I want to slowly move away from 1on1 training and start doing more small group training. It’s way more affordable and way more motivating for clients! In the small group training I’ve done thus far in my career I see people push way harder and make way more progress when they are training with a partner, friend, or teammate.

Deadlift 415x1 (20lbs PR)
Taking a break from Olympic Weightlifting until my shoulder feels better has its advantages. Like hitting a PR deadlift.
The past 16 months I’ve been more focused than ever on getting stronger (between weightlifting and now powerlifting) instead of having mixed and competing goals (which gets you no where).
Very happy with this PR. Consistency, focus, and patience > anything.
