🎓 Celebrating our GSGE Undergraduate, Graduate, and MEERL students who graduated this Tuesday! Wishing you all the best in your careers and looking forward to seeing as alumni in the future.
đź‘ŹCongrats to Dr. Chris Spencer for earning the W.W. Hutchinson Medal from the Geological Association of Canada (GAC).
Dr. Spencer has made significant contributions toward understanding the formation, destruction, and secular evolution of the continental crust and the tectonic processes responsible. His research focuses on using geochemistry to better understand how geologic processes change over billions of years. By conducting fieldwork and analyzing geochemical data, he is aiming to unravel how mountain building and volcanism have changed throughout Earth's history.
The next generation of natural resources industry leaders are being empowered to confront challenges with innovation and sustainability at the forefront. This is made possible by another generous $1.1-million donation from Mike Rose, Artsci’79, and Susan Riddell Rose, Sc’86, aimed at expanding and enhancing the Master of Earth and Energy Resources Leadership (MEERL) program, solidifying Queen's University's position as a pivotal force in reshaping the natural resource industry.

How Groundwater Impacts the People and Ecosystems of the South Pacific Islands
The Pacific Ocean is host to more than 30,000 islands, the vast majority of which are small, remote, and vulnerable to climate variability. Groundwater plays an important role in the resilience of these isolated environments. We will see how groundwater was a critical resource for the first settlers of Rapa Nui (Easter Island), how it helps coral reefs flourish in a nutrient desert (Darwin’s Paradox), and the role it plays in terrestrial flora and fauna. Understanding of these interactions is hindered by the complexity of groundwater flow in coastal and offshore environments. Our recent investigations of the distribution of groundwater flow to fringing coral reefs sheds some light on these processes. Climate change and sea level rise will disrupt and potentially overwhelm these unique and biologically critical ecosystems. An improved understanding of hydrogeologic systems and their interactions with marine life surrounding Pacific islands will be essential for strategic adaptation to environmental stresses.
We hope to see you there!
