Dr. Paul Hebert, Arts’69, has been fascinated by insects since childhood. This passion led to a groundbreaking 70-year journey in biodiversity. In April, he received the 2024 Benjamin Franklin Medal in Earth and Environmental Science for his pioneering work in DNA barcoding, joining the ranks of Nikola Tesla and Albert Einstein.

As draws near, Queen's University's Fine Art alumni are gathering in Kingston for a special reunion. Seventy-five of the program’s former students from across the globe will present their visual artwork at "Home Again", an exhibition that vividly showcases their artistic journeys. The exhibit is open to the public and will be on display at the Union Gallery from Sept. 3-14.

August 31 marks the International Day for People of African Descent, recognizing the important contributions of the African diaspora and combating discrimination. This day is part of the International Decade for People of African Descent (2015-2024), focused on social justice, anti-racism efforts, and initiatives to build more prosperous communities.

We spoke with Dr. June Soomer, Chair of the UN Permanent Forum on People of African Descent, who emphasized the ongoing importance of these initiatives beyond 2024.

Gord Wetherall, Sc’49, didn’t get a room of his own until he was 22. Just back from convoy duty in the North Atlantic and about to begin his classes at Queen's University, he moved into a room at the back of the second floor of 391 Brock St., a student boarding house since the early ’30s.

The woman who ran the boarding house over three decades was referred to by most of the students living in her home as Mrs. Wetherall. To Gord Wetherall, she was Mom.

When Melissa Martin, Artsci’84, learned that her favourite former professor, Dr. Frederic Schroeder, was in long-term care, she made sure to pay a visit. Dr. Fred’s passion for teaching and love for ancient Greek philosophy left a lasting impression on Melissa during her student days, and deeply impacted her career.

Although Dr. Fred passed away just weeks later, Melissa is thankful she had the chance express her gratitude when she did.

Chapter 6: Present day

Marriage equality is a reality in Canada, and gender identity rights are protected under the Canadian Human Rights Act. In 2019, the Queen's Q***r Alumni Chapter - QQAC was founded to create a positive advocacy space.

Today, Queen's University offers various supportive services for the 2SLGBTQ+ community, continuing to make strides toward inclusivity and acceptance. However, there's still significant work ahead to foster acceptance and belonging for everyone in and beyond the Queen's community.

Chapter 5: The 2000s

By the turn of the millennium, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled same-sex couples had the same rights as common-law heterosexual couples, and adoption was legal for gay and le***an couples in most provinces.

At Queen’s University, the LGBA became the Education on Q***r Issues Project (EQuIP). Despite continuous progress, the haze of discrimination still lingered. Dana Wesley, Artsci’09, MA’15, a member of the Moose Cree Nation, emerged as an advocate, focusing on uniting q***r and Indigenous communities.
