National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrates the strength of Canada’s aboriginal population: here, Canada’s First Nations are represented by an eagle, the Inuit are represented by a narwhal, and the Métis are represented by a violin. It is important that settler Canadians learn from the 94 Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action.

These Calls to Action are an important part of the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions’ resolve to address the cultural, emotional, physical, sexual, spiritual, and social violence weaponized against Original Peoples; however, a great deal of the emotional labour must be undertaken by settler Canadians, who must learn new ways of interacting with the Original Peoples and actively engage with Indigenous voices which address Canada's colonial history.

Image Description:

In the top left corner are three symbols enclosed by black circles: an eagle, a narwhal, and a violin. In the top right corner and down the side of the image is a splash of yellow, pink, blue and green.

On the left side of the image are the words “National Indigenous Peoples” in black, and “Day” in pink. To the right of this text is the number “21” in gradient yellow and pink, with coloured silhouettes of a narwhal, eagle, and violin attached to the “2”.

Below this imagery and to the left side of the image is the hashtag “NIDP2024”. At the bottom of the image is The Write Place logo in black. All of this content is displayed on a white background.

On March 12th at 2:30 PM, Elliot K. Cooper— a writer, visual artist, and activist currently working on his Masters of Library & Information Science (MLIS) at Western— will be delivering a talk entitled “Technology, Community and Identity”. Conversing with The Write Place’s own Abhimanyu Acharya, Cooper will draw upon his experiences as an autistic trans man to discuss his recently completed young-adult novel (from which he will read), his art, and the virtues (and shortcomings) of online communication with regard to the formation of identity.

The event will take place in the Andy & Helen Spriet Learning Commons, in the SLC.

Interrogating Race and Racism in Postsecondary Language Classrooms 02/05/2024

Prof. Vidya Natarajan, Coordinator of the Writing program, and Dr. Emily Pez, a long-time King’s Writing instructor, have contributed a co-authored chapter, "A Textbook Case of Antiracism: Course Readings and Critical Pedagogy for Multilingual First-Year University Writers," to Interrogating Race and Racism in Postsecondary Language Classrooms, an anthology of scholarly essays.

The chapter, based on a textbook they created and continue to use for Writing 1002F/G, reflects on our signature pedagogy, which empowers multilingual students to develop a critical understanding of expectations in first-year Writing courses while also introducing them to North American academic writing conventions.

Interrogating Race and Racism in Postsecondary Language Classrooms Postsecondary language classrooms perpetuate racial discrimination and linguistic inequalities, posing a significant problem for racialized students who face institutional barriers and erasure of their linguistic identities. Congratulations to Alexis Andrade, a Double Major in English Literature and Classical Studies, on earning “Highly Commended” status for her entry to the “Classical Studies and Archaeology” category of the Global Undergraduate Awards essay competition this year! Alexis came to King’s on a Principal’s Regis Entrance Scholarship and she has earned a place on the Dean’s Honour Roll every year since. Her undergraduate career began in our uniquely interdisciplinary Foundations in The New Liberal Arts program and it branched out into English at King’s and Classics at Western. Her submission to the Global Undergraduate Awards “explores the essence and importance of the Feriale Duranum – a fragmented papyrus text that offers insight into Roman army celebrations and anniversaries. The paper questions the premise that the document is relevant to Dura-Europos as a whole, arguing that it serves exclusively military reasons rather than reflecting the site's local norms. The paper concludes that the Feriale Duranum was made for military usage, notably for cataloguing events and customs of troops, by comparing the findspot, language, and content with Dura-Europos' important archaeological sites, local languages, and religious practices.” Well done, Alexis!
