78 years ago today, 14,000 Canadian troops stormed the beach code-named "Juno" in Normandy as part of the Allied invasion of Normandy, known as "D-Day." Last month, the King's World Wars in History, Memory, and Reconciliation class stood on these very beaches to reflect and learn about the true cost of war.

During the Normandy campaign, the Canadian Armed Forces lost 5,500 soldiers, including 359 on D-Day.

On this day, we remember them.

Our journey through the battlefields and memorials of the World Wars wouldn’t have been the same without professor Katrina Pasierbek, instructing and inspiring our students along the way. Her passion and enthusiasm made history come alive and ensured a learning experience they’ll never forget!

The Power of Place: studying the history and memory of the two world wars where they took place has given King's University College at Western University students the opportunity to engage with contested landscapes in a deep and meaningful way.

It’s been emotional, it’s been impactful and it’s been unforgettable.

Flowers washed upon the shores of Omaha Beach leading up to Les Braves, the sculpture commemorating American soldiers.

From Arromanches to Omaha to Pointe du Hoc, the coastlines and shorelines from our textbooks came alive to connect us to these places that were so instrumental in the success of the Normandy landings.

We’ve arrived at Juno Beach! It’s fitting our first stop was Canada house, commonly referred to as the first house liberated on Juno Beach.

It’s a very special place for Canadians, it’s our place to be and place to call home in France. See you tomorrow Centre Juno Beach / Juno Beach Centre!

Today, on VE Day, we’ve arrived in Dieppe- an impactful way to start the Second World War phase of our Experiential Learning experience.

Today marks the 77th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day and History at King's students are touring battlefields across Belgium and France. On May 8, 1945 Germany unconditionally surrendered its military forces to the Allies.

As the class visits memorials and spaces that honour and commemorate the fallen, we are reminded of and reflect upon the true costs of war.

Unity, death, and sacrifice: Saint Symphorien Military Cemetery honours the fallen from both sides of WWI equally and neutrally. A beacon of possibility and unity, this cemetery is celebrated for equal its commemoration.

It is also the final resting place of Canadian soldier George Lawrence Price, whose story was shared with us by Avery Campbel. Price was the last WWI soldier to fall before the armistice and has become a symbol of the futility and loss of war, when in reality he was just a kid doing his job, on Nov 11, 1918 at 10:58 a.m.

As we make our way through the Somme Valley we’re learning from our professors and learning from each other, sharing knowledge, stories, and of course, history, as we travel through the French countryside.

The class participated in discussions of controversial imperial commemorative practices at the Neuve-Chapelle Memorial today. Christian Haworth led the class as the student expert with his “tour guide” presentation.

Alyssa Kaminski presented her solider profile on Major Archibald Becher and Natan Andrade presented his soldier profile on Lieutenant Colonel Henry Campbell Becher, both buried at the Beuvry Communal Cemetery.

Our student experts gaining more experience with their leadership and communication skills. Well done.

Being taken from the classroom to has new meaning today. The World Wars in History class was at the Canadian National Vimy Memorial and heard four soldier presentations from students, and a final presentation at the Cabaret-Rouge cemetery. They were given a special tour of the Grange Tunnels under Vimy where soliders worked and prepared for the Battle of Vimy Ridge. They also walked through the preserved trenches around the memorial where the soldiers walked over 100 years ago. An incredible moment for our history students today and one that they will always remember.

The Vimy Memorial is one of two Canadian memorials to be located outside of Canada, and is dedicated to those who died and were never recovered in France.

The World Wars in History class toured the battlefields and memorials via bikes today. They toured memorials from 1915-1917 and did so on bikes in an effort to engage in the landscape in a more unique and intimate way. In total, they biked 24 km and saw the St. Julien Memorial, Tyne Cot CWGC and 85th Battalion Memorial to name a few.

The World Wars in History, Memory, and Reconciliation class has finally made it to Belgium and France for their experiential learning trip! Today, they took a tour of the Essex Farm Cemetery and Berks Cemetery Extension and learned about the soldiers who died during the First World War, the Advanced Dressing Station, the West 49th Riding Memorial and the John McCrae memorial.

Students take turns each day and are presenting on soldiers and locations they have researched.
