Not doing them correctly or not doing them at all
Deadlifts are a primary hinging movement
Lifting objects off the ground is something we do everyday to some capacity.
- Picking up your kids
- Moving furniture
- Grabbing heavy groceries
These are all great examples of daily deadlift practices. Granted the loads are very different but the pattern is the same.
Deadlifting is not bad for your back. Doing it incorrectly or lacking proper technique is. Injuries with the deadlift often occur because the individual was not utilizing proper form or exceeded a capacity they were unable to handle!
What are your thoughts on the deadlift ?

INTENT!
Your output is only as good as your intentions
This applies to many things in life. In the context of weightlifting and exercise, it’s important to know the intent of your movement.
What are you trying to achieve ?
What muscles are working ?
Why you chose this exercise ?
You don’t have to be an expert in this but you should have a proper understanding of the moving parts.
And if you don’t, then you should not be afraid to speak to someone who does or work with a coach to tell help you better understand.

̲𝐇̲𝐮̲𝐫̲𝐭̲ ̲𝐝̲𝐨̲𝐞̲𝐬̲𝐧̲’̲𝐭̲ ̲𝐞̲𝐪̲𝐮̲𝐚̲𝐥̲ ̲𝐡̲𝐚̲𝐫̲𝐦
But it can be a warning sign that change is necessary ‼️
Pain is not an accurate measure of tissue health, pain is a protector!
Pain is an output of the brain: a warning system telling us to slow down and assess the situation and maybe change up our behaviors a bit to mitigate the pain.
When our pain system becomes over protective, it stops us doing the movements, activities and other things and that are actually necessary for recovery
Fear of pain can be worse than the pain itself
Sadly the medical system has often taught us that we are fragile, which is simply not the case.

Sharp pain in the upper back?
Here are my 3 Go to Moves when this happens to me
1. Soft tissue release of muscles in surrounding area
2. Thoracic extensions on foam roller
3. Thoracic rotation using roller as a guide
These work particularly well because they address the reasons that this usual occurs :
Muscles surrounding the spine and shoulders chronically get tight with poor posture and overuse!
Most of us lock extension when we sit all day unless you are an athlete that works in a rotational sport you likely lack, proper rotation in the spine.
Which of these gives you the most relief ?

Altho 2 handed movements are great, give you more support and ultimately let you pull more weight.
I love including Single arm movements as they allow you to address rotational restrictions, it provides lengthening and strengthening of the surrounding muscles of the thoracic spine.
Poor thoracic mobility can lead to a number of problems such as neck pain, upper back pain, decreased athletic performance, and poor posture. It can also contribute to compensatory movement patterns in other parts of the body, such as the low back or hips.
Incorporating thoracic mobility into a regular exercise routine can have a significant impact on overall health and function.

Chiro’s do more than crack bones 😮
I know, I know. You’ve heard the old stigma that chiropractors only crack!
What I do treat :
Shoulder impingement, Ankle sprains, Disc injuries, TMJ dysfunction, Low back pain, Headaches, Hip pain, Carpal Tunnel. Plantar Fasciitis… etc
What don’t we treat ?!
And yes chiropractic adjustments is one of the many tools that I use and it is a great one. But it isn’t the ONLY one.
As a modern chiro, I treat many different injuries with a gambit of different techniques : Soft tissue, mobilization, Active release, adjustments, IASTM, Functional acupuncture, Rehab and strengthening, etc.

Elbow pain ?
Pain at the elbow can come from many sources. Often times from repetitive stress injuries, overloading tendons/joints or some form of trauma.
If you’re experiencing pain in your elbow while doing curls, here a 3 ways to help reduce the pain so you can continue to train.
1. Release the soft tissue in the surrounding area
2. Work on mobility and strength around the elbow
3. Focus on eccentrics and slowing down the movement
Let me know if these help

Building Traps Efficiently:
Working Through Your Upper Back With Drag Downs
Want to build bigger traps? Shrugs may not be the most efficient way. Try this: instead of a dumbbell or barbell, use a machine that allows you to pull on an angle downwards, let the weight a drag down to work the entire upper back and not just the upper trap fibers.

It’s no secret that not everyone loves to exercise.
But we are aware of the overwhelming benefit of strength and movement, especially as we age.
As a trainer, coach, therapist it’s important to foster a positive experience and association with movement!
Worry a little less about over cueing and make it fun for the individual!

Learn how to naturally decompress your spine without any tools/machines.
Proper breathing and use of your diaphragm muscles (which attaches directly into the spine) can help to create a decompression effect on the spine.
Given the way we spend our time, compressing the spine most of the day. This is a great way to take stress off the body.
