Voted back-to-back years as Ottawa’s Top Choice Chiropractic Clinic!

Thank you all for your continued support during these challenging times — it means more than you know.

__________

When I receive a personal referral from you, it’s the sincerest compliment you can give me. It doesn’t just say “here’s more business” — it’s more than that, it means you wish the same experience for those closest to you.

That’s not nothing.
It’s heartwarming to have your trust and fires me up!

Helping you straighten up what life messes up 😉

// Are you a runner or dancer with recurring ankle sprains?🦶🏻

If I asked you to stand on your toes, would it look like my patient?
Heels pulled inwards and pressure over the outside toes?

This position is inherently more unstable for the ankle and makes it more likely to sprain. Active foot control in relation to the rest of your movements is your foundation. Make it robust.
__________

1. It’s not about good vs bad movement, it’s about efficient vs non-efficient movement.

🦵🏻when it comes to movement, our ability to distribute forces from our muscles and joints is often a focus in treatment

2. It’s also about movement symmetry in sports like running and dance (excluding sports that are 1 side dominant).

🦵🏻let’s load both sides equally so that they can perform and adapt equally (or as close as we can get)

Who wants to see some ankle exercises?

// The is NO “one-size-fits-all” for squat technique or what it should “look like”.

Swipe to 6 anatomical variations to consider the next time you hear someone tell you exactly how to squat.
__________
Consider this:
🦴Is your skeleton exactly the same as your mom? how about your grandfather?
Probably very similar but not exactly the same.

🩻How about your professor? Is it the same as theirs? What about your best friend? Is it exactly the same shape and size?
Likely not — because everyone’s anatomy is unique to their genetics and lifestyle. We share MANY similarities but none are actually the same.

So how can we expect the combinations of femurs and hip sockets to produce the exact same looking squat?

These are some of several other factors that will determine our “preferred” squatting pattern.
🦴past injuries
🦴your activity/sport
🦴soft tissues
🦴ankles, knees, etc.

Squatting is universal, but every squat is unique.

My patients will often hear me say, “I made this one up” — not because I can’t find a generic exercise for them, but rather because I’ve explored the movement challenges and positions myself so that I feel what you feel.

// CORE strengthening exercises can help with back pain BUT we dont always have to do them to fix your back pain…

Specificity matters:
A diagnosis of “low back pain” doesn’t give us enough info about your* low back pain because there are MANY presentations.
🤓Be cautious with posts that claim “TOP 3 CORE EXERCISES FOR LOW BACK PAIN” — the best exercises are the ones that address the “where, why and how” of your back pain.

____________________

Research has repeatedly shown that abdominal activation precedes limb movement in healthy individuals — and often occur after* in those with pain or injury.

When we move our arms and legs, our core becomes our foundation. We “push off” so to speak from our centre. So it’s an integral part of your recovery.

Do you lack coordination?
Do you need stability? Or maybe mobility?
What’s your breathing pattern like?
Are you post-partum?
Any prior injuries?

PS. laughing is an easy way I show patients that their core muscles work, we just need to use them better😉

// “My got worse over the weekend. Feels like I’m back at square one.”

It’s okay to feel discouraged. But not forever or else we won’t get anywhere😅

Remember, your road to any past accomplishment — social, academic, career, family, etc. — I’m sure had setbacks and barriers along the way. C’est la vie💁🏼‍♀️

What works for one person, may not work for you. Psychological factors influence our physical recovery. I enjoy having these little but mighty💪🏻 conversations with you because they go a long way towards your outlook on health goals.

// 3 INJURIES, 1 MUSCLE🦵🏼

In the last couple weeks, I’ve seen 3 re**us femoris strains from 3 different causes (swipe).

____________________
Re**us femoris, part of our quadricep muscle group, is unique in his function: he is the only one that exerts direct movement at the knee AND hip!

And the hamstrings do the opposite movement, right? How might that influence things?

This highlights a notion I use with patients: it’s not about one individual muscle. It’s usually a combination of more than just 1 body part or region.

Dancers, gymnasts, soccer players, skaters… should all be training this muscle, but for different purposes!

// Rather than 10 fun facts, here’s 2 TRUTHS & 1 LIE about my clinical interests:

1. I've conducted injury prevention research with the 🚒
2. I've ridden handcuffed in the back of a police car 🚔
3. I got accepted to the program 🚑

🚨Which is the lie?!

Ever since my kinesiology studies at I have been interested in a sub-group of “tactical athletes”🚨those individuals who need to be physically fit to meet their job demands…

I’m talking about you! 😉

Your work requires a higher level of fitness, therefore it makes sense that performance training or rehabilitation from an injury needs to meet and surpass those demands.

// “WEAR & TEAR” — unfortunately, it’s a little more complex than that for developing knee osteoarthritis (OA).

TRUE: Knee injuries (ACL, meniscus) are among the strongest risk factors for the development of knee OA.

FUN FACT: our knees are the largest single joint in our body and allow for so many fundamental movements.

Fundamental because you’ve likely seen the difficulty those with osteoarthritis face when trying to get out of a chair, climb their front stairs or walk longer distances.

📚Recent research has been pointing towards the role of knee extensor strength to the subsequent development of knee osteoarthritis.

Our muscle strength is a modifiable risk factor and we should keep them healthy! Our muscles function to absorb forces, stabilize our joints, hence protecting joint surfaces during loading and movement.

Want to reduce your risk, but don’t know where to start? I want to help give you direction.

// “Have we fixated on fixing something that is neither fragile nor broken.”

Human movement is inherently variable. And we are very adaptable with a spectrum of tolerances and variations in anatomy and function.

There is no magical blueprint. 🗺

// We’ve ALL been there, amIright?!😅

We’re feeling great and we hardly notice just how great we’re feeling.

But daaaaaamn pain can dominate our lives when we’re experiencing it.

Absence is much harder to detect than presence – because our brains (naturally) place greater emphasis on what is present that what is absent.

Put as much emphasis on your good days as you do on your bad. Celebrate what your body CAN do, and exercise is the best THANK YOU you can give your body.

So thank your body. Thank your body for allowing you to experience the gift that is today, PAIN-FREE.

// With me, it’s more than the adjustment.

𝗬𝗲𝘀 — adjustments can be very beneficial
𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗲 — certain research guidelines recommend its use

𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗼𝗸𝗮𝘆 — some patients aren’t comfortable with it
𝗔𝗯𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 — some patients ask for it specifically

𝗡𝗼𝗽𝗲 — they aren’t all I do
𝗡𝗼 — I won’t do it just because

Here’s why: as a regulated healthcare professional 𝙋𝙧𝙞𝙢𝙪𝙢 𝙣𝙤𝙣 𝙣𝙤𝙘𝙚𝙧𝙚 — first do no harm – is always guiding my recommendations …and adjustments sometimes aren’t included for several reasons

But it’s a 𝗪𝗶𝗻-𝗪𝗶𝗻  — we can get results with and without using them

Don’t get me wrong, I love giving and receiving them because they do feel good💆🏻
But many therapies can feel good.
I strive for effective🤓
