Yesterday, staff and volunteers from The Royal, Ottawa Community Housing - OCH and John Howard Society (JHS) met at the Lebreton Transitional Rehabilitation Program (Lebreton House) to build, fill, and repair garden beds to create a sustainable food source for clients in forensic programs. The goal is to empower clients to plant their own seeds, nurture their growth, and foster new beginnings. ๐ฑ ๐ฑ ๐ฑ ๐ค

๐ซ ๐ต A new therapeutic guitar group, originated from recreation therapist Ashleigh McGuintyโs desire to bring a music program to the Forensic Assessment Unit at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre, brings joy, camaraderie, and harmony to participants and volunteers alike. ๐ธ ๐
Inspired by the "Guitars for Vets" style programs, which match veterans with donated guitars and lessons, McGuinty connected with Dr. Gilles Comeau, the director of the University of Ottawa Music and Health Research Institute (MHRI) and senior scientist at the University of Ottawa Institute for Mental Health Research (IMHR) at The Royal. Together, they had the idea of starting a guitar group. Comeau approached a contact of his, Ottawa musician Yoga Care with Michael Fahey, to lead it.
Their first composition was inspired by a gratitude exercise. The notes were given to Fahey, who used them to compose a song simply called โGratitude.โ The lyrics evoke the joy of simple things we normally take for granted โ blue skies, sunny days, the stars above. โ๏ธ โ๏ธ

Last Friday, community leadership campers made a heartfelt impact by writing letters to clients in our geriatrics program. ๐๐พ Appreciation post! ๐๐ฝ
Yesterday staff, volunteers and senior management celebrated Debbie, secretary III in Diagnostics & ECT, with a standing ovation as she exited the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre, where she has worked for the past 40 years, after her last shift before retirement.
It was the little things Debbie did that made the biggest difference. From helping with wardrobe malfunctions to giving gifts to her single colleagues on Valentineโs Day to motivating many employees to go running over their lunch hour, Debbie was always so thoughtful and kind to everyone she met at The Royal. No matter how busy things were she always encouraged others to take a break and do to something they enjoyed. ๐๐พ โค๏ธ
Debbie, on behalf of everyone at The Royal, we thank you for your years of service. We value your commitment to our organization and are grateful for the positivity and bright light you brought to all. We wish you all the best in your retirement and will always remember your words of wisdom, โno matter what, just keep smiling, even if you donโt like what someone has to say, keep your smile going.โ ๐๐
