Congratulations Dionne!
The Faculty of KHS wants to send out a big congratulations to Dionne Tatlow on completing her Master of Science in Kinesiology. Read below to learn more about Dionne and her research.
Why did you choose to do your graduate studies at the UofR?
"There was a grant offered through the Chiropractors Association of Saskatchewan to help with a research degree under Dr. Paul Bruno. I met with Dr. Bruno way back in 2018 and planned to start in the fall of 2019 (I was living and working in La Ronge at the time)! He was a great supervisor, and I knew I would learn a lot with him!"
What did you do your graduate research on?
"I did an online survey study on Injury Prevalence in Open Water Swimmers. It was a bit of a passion project; being an open-water swimmer myself, I was very interested in expanding the knowledge in this area! The sport is quite popular (and growing fast) in the UK, Australia and a few other regions, but open-water swimmers typically have to extrapolate on research conducted in the pool swimming population. I was lucky enough to hear from 156 respondents (recreational/masters open water swimmers over 18 years of age), and my most interesting finding was that next to shoulder pain (50% of reported injuries), neck complaints were most common (12% of reported injuries). In the pool swimming population, neck pain isn't very common at all, so it was nice to find something new!"
What have you been up to since completing your graduate studies/what do you do for work?
"I enjoy my clinical practice as a Chiropractor, so I'm still at the University practicing upstairs at the Centre for Health, Wellness and Performance (CWHP), but hopefully will be teaching a bit more in the future. Of course, I enjoy treating all sorts of people and injuries, but I especially love it when swimmers and triathletes come in and I get to put my knowledge to work!"
