Screening alert! This Thursday, July 25th, 7PM RPL Film Theatre catch the film premiere of this year's 48 Hour Film Frenzy!

Last month, filmmakers got together at the Filmpool to write, shoot, and hand process their very own 16mm black and white short film 🎥 The 48 kicked off Friday night with an introductory Bolex workshop given by Matt Ripplinger, and continued throughout the (thankfully) sunny weekend. The team had a great time scouting locations for their story ideas, coming up with creative solutions, and incorporating the special "key" elements into their stories. Catch these, along with a film from the Dunlop Art Gallery Digital 48 this Thursday, July 25th, 7PM RPL Film Theatre for a dynamite short program 🌊 Hope to see you there! 🔥

Applications & nominations for the 2024 Trudy Stewart Prize are now open 💗 In honour of the late Trudy Stewart, this annual prize allocates funds for Indigenous filmmakers, moving image artists, moving image curators, moving image art critics, and/or screenplay writers within Saskatchewan. More information and application can be found through the link below. Apply or nominate by June 14th, 2024 🌸🌸🌸

https://www.filmpool.ca/trudy-stewart-prize

The Trudy Stewart Prize is comprised of five awards for Indigenous filmmakers, moving image curators, moving image art critics and screenplay writers. Applicants and nominees can be non-members of the Saskatchewan Filmpool Cooperative as well as members. They can be at any stage of their practice (emerging, established, etc).

This award was first developed in 2020 by the Saskatchewan Filmpool Cooperative to honour Trudy Stewart’s legacy with community and family consultation. In 2022, the prize was relaunched to include a larger pool of funds, a self-determined mentorship component, equipment allocations, and memberships.

ABOUT TRUDY STEWART
'Originally from Flying Dust First Nation, Trudy was born in North Battleford and spent most of her childhood in a rural community in southwest Saskatchewan before moving to Regina. A ‘60s scoop survivor, Stewart was adopted at a time when child welfare authorities took, or “scooped,” Indigenous children from their families and placed them in foster homes to be adopted out. Stewart was just beginning to understand her identity as a ‘60s scoop survivor – a theme she explored in her short documentary, From Up North – when she unexpectedly passed away in 2019 at the age of 46.

An award-winning filmmaker, community-builder, mentor, and activist, Stewart made significant contributions to both Indigenous cinema and processes of reconciliation. Through her films, she inspired greater understanding and awareness about the legacy of colonization, and honoured the victims and survivors of residential schools.'

Join us at Hampton Hub for Dinner & Movie on Thursday, May 2nd, 2024 - A May Day Night Out - We'll be screening 'They Don't Wear Black-Tie' (1981) directed by Leon Hirszman, served up with a classic Brazilian Platter - feijoada, dirty rice & salad. The film stands as a Brazilian cinematic achievement that paints a realistic portrait of working-class families and generational conflicts within the labor movement itself.

'In 1979, Hirszman collaborated with playwright Gianfrancesco Guarnieri on a film adaption of Guarnieri's famous play about Brazilian working-class life, "They Don't Wear Black Tie". The resulting film, released in 1981, reconfigured the politics and content of the 1958 play to fit the new era of the late 1970s when dramatic metalworkers' strikes placed São Paulo on the front lines in the fight against the Brazilian military dictatorship.'

Three upcoming screenings hosted at the Filmpool, programmed by Giovana Nabarrete de Souza Cruz, our Programming & Mentorship Coordinator. Come get cosy for these Thursday night films ❤️
Doors open at 5:30, screening at 6pm

Program and Notes from Giovana:

Thursday March 14th
Black, Bold, and Beautiful directed by Nadine Valcin | 1999 | 42min | - With International Women’s Day on March 8th in mind, this film was chosen because it showcases Black Canadian women dealing with concepts of identity and culture through their hairstyle.

Thursday March 28th
Soraida, a Woman of Palestine directed by Tahani Rached | 2004 | 1h 59min | - Documentary film focused on Soraida, a Palestinian woman resisting neo-colonisation and military occupation in her own way. Filmed 20 years ago, but sadly, applicable in every sense to our current situation.

Thursday April 11th
Qallunaat! Why White People Are Funny directed by Mark Sandiford | 2006 | 52min | - For once, the “exotic” documentary subject is the white population of Canada. From the point of view of Inuit filmmakers, this is an extremely entertaining and critical documentary that sheds light onto the problematic structures of exoticism within cinema.
