Happy Women Wednesday! Today, we will look at the case of Canada v Lavell, which played a key role in the fight for Indigenous women’s rights. This case is particularly notable because it was the first time that the gender inequality ingrained in the 1876 Indian Act was brought to the attention of both the public and the courtroom.

Michelle O’Bonswawin was appointed as the first Indigenous judge on the Supreme Court of Canada in the country’s history. With an impressive professional background, knowledge of Gladue principles, and a lived experience as an Indigenous woman, O’Bonsawin’s appointment shall prove to be beneficial for the court and for Canada as it is a step towards making the justice system more representative of Canada’s diverse population.
