Hydrogen is touted as a climate solution, but can it be good business? 10/11/2024

Hydrogen is often seen as a key element in the global energy transition, offering a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels—in particular for difficult-to-decarbonize sectors such as heavy-duty transportation and steel and cement manufacturing. But turning hydrogen into a globally traded commodity requires more than just production. According to new UBC Sauder research, hydrogen’s commercial success hinges critically on innovation, strategic government policies, and long-term contracts to ensure cost-effective production and scalable trade.

Meet Annie Wu, a second-year UBC Sauder BCom student and a LIFT program member who recently traveled to Africa to teach business curriculum to LIFT participants. ✈️ 🧳

Having started her own nonprofit in high school, Annie's interest in philanthropy has motivated her to give back abroad in her own way—through the skills she has learned during her BCom degree so far.

“It’s easy to take for granted how valuable this knowledge really is. I’ve realized that even at 18 years old, I don’t need to be years into my career and making a ton of money to enact change. I’m still able to make a significant and sustainable impact with my knowledge by empowering students to go and start business ventures on their own.”

Throughout September, UBC Sauder provided learning opportunities for students, staff, and faculty to deepen our understanding of Truth and Reconciliation. We took this month to listen, learn, and reflect on the resilience of Indigenous communities and the impact of residential schools.

As part of these efforts, we were honoured to host knowledge sessions, including an insightful workshop on Indigenous history in Canada led by L. Maynard Harry (Qwastånayå) from the Tla'amin Nation. We also welcomed Sempulyan Stewart Gonzales, a Squamish Nation member and residential school survivor, who shared his deeply personal journey, reminding us of the ongoing work needed for reconciliation.

On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we recognize the strength of survivors and remember those who didn’t return home. We extend our gratitude to our Indigenous presenters and participants for their dedication to this journey.

Reconciliation begins with each of us, and we encourage continued learning and reflection.
