Today, June 21, marks National Indigenous Peoples Day. The cultural and heritage celebrations of numerous Indigenous groups and communities have traditionally taken place on June 21 or during a similar time period because of the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year.

In the Teacher Education Office, within the Faculty of Education and across the UBC campuses, we recognize and celebrate the history, heritage, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples across the country.

As members of the UBC community, let's come together and explore different ways we can express solidarity and support on this important day.

Teacher candidates completing the Bachelor of Education program in July 2024 can now apply for graduation. Due to the transition to Workday, teacher candidates must apply for graduation by July 31, 2024. The application is available online via the SSC (not Workday).

In order to be recommended to the Ministry of Education Teacher Regulation Branch for certification, and receive the UBC BEd degree, you must apply for graduation—even if you do not plan to attend the ceremonies in November 2024 .

🚨 Teacher candidates, please ensure you apply to graduate by July 31, 2024. 🚨 This is a hard deadline and late applications will not be accepted by the university. If you miss the deadline, you will have to apply to graduate next year (May 2025). Therefore, it is strongly advised that TCs apply for graduation as soon as possible, if completing the program this July.

Questions about your graduation application can be sent to [email protected].

✿ Flower appreciation post — the Common Camas ✿

If you have been on campus over the past couple months, you may have noticed a cordoned off patch of grass in front of the Reconciliation Pole on Main Mall. A meadow has been planted to attract local pollinators — some of the plant varieties include field chickweed, nodding onion, farewell to spring, California oatgrass, yarrow, and the common camas. While no flowers have bloomed as of yet, the plants are thriving.

Camas is an herb that produces a beautiful blue-purple flower. It grows wild in the West Kootenays, and WKTEP staff have shared photos with the TEO over the years whenever this rare bloom is spotted (slides 3-5). According to the Kootenay Native Plant Society's website: "Camas was a dietary staple for many Indigenous peoples wherever it grew, and has been called a ‘cultural keystone species’."

Seeing this meadow planted for the pollinators and UBC community, in this special location, is a spot of delight and appreciated. Stop by to see how the plants develop and bloom as the days become warmer. Some other places on campus to see camas growing is by the Beaty Biodiversity Museum and right in front of Brock Hall. 🙏

To learn more about this plant and others, visit https://kootenaynativeplants.ca/our-work/camas/.
