Diversifying higher education faculty: Five Adler University students receive DFI fellowship | Adler University 08/01/2024

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, of the 1.5 million college and university faculty in the U.S., 72% are White, 13% are Asian, 7% are Black, and 6% are Hispanic.

To help increase the diversity of educators in Illinois, the state established the Diversifying Higher Education Faculty in Illinois (DFI) program in 2004. The goal? Financially supporting students from traditionally underrepresented minority groups and growing the number of minority full-time tenure-track faculty and staff at Illinois’ two- and four-year public and private colleges and universities.

We are thrilled to announce that in July, DFI revealed its recipients for the 2024-25 DFI Fellowship, which include five students—and future higher education faculties-- from Adler University!

For Yasmin Abdoulraman, a Psy.D. student at our Vancouver Campus, spare time is dedicated to the gym, yoga, family, and conducting meta-analysis research and presenting at national conventions. Over the past several months, she has been looking for the answer on whether the antidepressant Trazodone can improve or slow down the decline of cognitive functioning. This June, Yasmine and Vancouver faculty member Amir Sepehry, Ph.D., had the honour of presenting their findings at the 85th Annual National Convention of the Canadian Psychological Association in Ottawa, Ontario. Their work exemplifies the dedication and expertise within our academic community.

Dr. Henning is setting ambitious goals to expand high-quality trauma education and training. Adler University Library launches pilot program to create open, no-cost course materials | Adler University 07/09/2024

🎉 Exciting News! 🎉

The Adler University Library has secured a State of Illinois grant to launch a two-year pilot program providing open educational resources (OER) to our students. This means the University is working on providing more no-cost, openly licensed course materials.

Online Campus Librarian Dorinne Banks, who initiated the grant application, said, “The high cost of textbooks is one factor affecting our students’ learning outcomes and student success.” Her experience with OERs before joining Adler inspired the creation of this pilot program.

Adler University graduate student Christopher Schroeder shares with Tribune, that the challenges of homelessness are not just a distant concern—they are a lived reality. Having experienced homelessness himself, recent encounters with those currently facing this struggle serve as reminders of the crucial role compassion and empathy play. “By paying attention and keeping our hearts open, we can find countless ways to make positive differences in the lives of those in our communities.” As an emerging psychologist, his journey underscores the profound impact that staying attuned to these needs can have, inspiring a more compassionate and inclusive society.

For Nola Remi-Adelasoye, improving workplace culture is personal.

“I want to make sure organizations are focused on their employees’ mental health because I’ve been there,” said Remi-Adelasoye. “I’ve experienced workplace bullying. I’ve been treated less than.”

The challenges she faced are not “just because I’m a Black woman or an immigrant with an accent,” she shared, but because co-workers have ignored her education, experience, or skills. Employers often didn’t know how to support her or make meaningful changes.

Driven by these experiences, Remi-Adelasoye decided to take action to create a better future for employees facing similar challenges.

In observance of today, the Adler University Immigrant Justice Association organized an event earlier in the week to discuss ways to support those who are forcibly displaced. Adjunct faculty member Patricia Perez, Ph.D., emphasized the need for socially responsible clinicians to prioritize health equity and utilize their privilege to advocate for vulnerable populations. The Association also took their efforts beyond our campus, participating in a rally in downtown Chicago with World Refugee Day Chicago, where Beatriz Ponce De León, deputy mayor of Immigrant, Migrant and Refugee Rights, read the Mayor’s official proclamation alongside Adler faculty, alum and city alderman and aldermanic staff.

Coalition expands opportunities for higher education in Illinois prisons | Adler University 05/28/2024

Discover the work of the Illinois Coalition for Higher Ed in Prison (IL-CHEP) and its unwavering dedication to expanding educational access to those who are incarcerated. Today, only 3% of Illinois’ prison population have access to college-level courses. Expanding that is IL-CHEP’s mission, according to Angel Pantoja, who knows all too well about the power of higher education. He was only 17 when he was sentenced to 23 years in prison. While incarcerated, he earned his GED and an associate degree. After his release, he joined IL-CHEP as project manager and today serves as a reentry policy coordinator under the Office of Illinois Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton.

For Amanda Sullivan, a Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology (Psy.D.) student, her assessment practicum at the Regional Treatment Centre in Abbotsford, B.C. involves traveling twice a week and spending 16 hours on-site. She juggles multiple assessments and schedules appointments with inmates. To prepare to see a client, she reviews their files to determine any risk-related factors. Amanda values this challenging experience, saying, "If you can work comfortably and effectively with inmates, you can work with anyone."

The event was held in collaboration with Truth and Reconciliation Week at our Vancouver Campus. More than 1,400 students are enrolled at our campuses in downtown Chicago and Vancouver, and through our Online Campus for fully online degree programs.
