Meeting inspirational fitness leaders at the Canadian Health and Fitness Institute dinner.

John Weston, former Member of Parliament, and now president of the Canadian Health and Fitness Institute. www.chfi.fit

Dr. Jack Taunton is a sports medicine legend. I first met him when I was chosen as a volunteer acupuncturist for the 2010 Olympics. He was as gracious and generous with his time then as he is now. He is co-founder of UBC's Allan McGavin Sports Medicine Centre and has pages and pages of accomplishments and contributions. https://bcsportshall.com/honoured_member/dr-jack-taunton/ It was wonderful to get to chat with him again.

I also talked with Tommy Europe, BC Sports Hall of Famer, ex-CFL player, fitness trainer extraordinaire, and stuntman. He has a book already published (10-Pound SHRED) and another one coming out soon (ish) about fitness for those over 40 (also those...ahem...over 50).

Dietary Supplement Products Marketed for Immune Support 05/23/2024

FYI, if you order supplements on Amazon. It's possible that labels have been changed, compromising effectiveness and safety! https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2794987
This is just ONE reason why it's important that we give our input to the federal government and NNHPD/Health Canada about the changes they are making to fees for Canadian manufacturers and distributors. Those changes will make it harder and more expensive for us to get the products we need in Canada, without actually increasing our safety. Health Canada says it's adding fees for "cost recovery" purposes for increasing their oversight on natural health products in Canada. But we don't need that. Yes, of course there are some bad actors, but our incidents of health complaints associated with natural health products is low, and there are many good companies who are compliant with the current rules and many that go above and beyond for safety. The increased costs to them will mean they will have to decide whether to raise their prices, drop products from their manufacturing or distributing, or leave Canada altogether. That will leave us having to order outside of Canada for more of our products, and some other countries have very poor or NO regulations and oversight. So, what can you do? Talk to your MP. Tell them you're concerned and you want them to push Health Canada to reconsider their current path for the NNHPD. Buy from your local health food stores. And find qualified health professionals who can guide you on which supplements are right for you and which supplement companies are good ones. https://fullscript.com/blog/is-it-safe-to-buy-supplements-on-amazon?utm_source=Iterable&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Master_Template_1_Email_Design_System&utm_content=9947057

We've come a long way, baby. Ugh, I always hated that Virginia Slims cigarette ad, but their slogan kind of rolls off the tongue, doesn't it? Traditional Chinese Medicine really has come a long way in BC and in Canada. But we're working hard right now to make sure that in new government regulatory changes we'll be able to take care of our patients with a modern version of TCM that continues to be safe and effective. For details about what's happening and why you might want to write or talk to your MLA and [email protected], read my blog at https://activetcm.com/tcm-yesterday-and-today-an-ongoing-battle/ .

The flavour pungent in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) covers both hot, spicy foods, as well as acrid and aromatic ones. In this video I briefly cover some of the health benefits of this flavour and some of the foods recommended to acquire the benefits.

Happy International Women's Day! And, to my mom, Happy Birthday!
Here are some of the ways that women have contributed to my own profession of Traditional Chinese Medicine (in acupuncture research) https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9595636/, not to mention, those who teach, practice, write books, and on and on.

Happy International Women's Day!

I’ve always loved reading, but ever since university, very little of that has been fiction. I joined a book club through a friend a few years ago, but hadn’t been for a long time. I was going to join the next one, just for the chance to meet up again with these wonderful women even though I hadn’t read the book.

But then my friend told me this book is about Traditional Chinese Medicine. Even though book club was supposed to be two days later, I decided to plow through to finish it. So glad I did!

Lady Tan’s Circle of Women is a fictional story based on a real woman named Tan Yunxian, a female doctor of TCM in the mid 1400s to 1500s. She had a book published when she was 50, based on her cases, particularly of women’s health issues, but also of common health issues of the time. She faced a LOT of adversities, including that women of the time were considered useless if they were educated. What an amazing woman!

I wrote a blog about this book and TCM in my most recent blog you can check out via the link from my profile page (click on health tips and blogs and then "my most recent blogs").

I love sour foods. Well, sweet and sour foods, especially. You might guess that one of the main actions of sour foods is astringing, but in this video I talk a bit more detail about that and other health benefits of sour flavour.

Bitter foods, while not necessarily the fave flavour for taste, are often powerful. Many medicinal herbs are bitter tasting, so this is a big flavour topic. And Traditional Chinese Medicine lists many therapeutic benefits to bitter foods.

Do you like bitter-tasting foods?

Salty is another fave flavour with a bad rap. Like sugar, salt is something that has high value to our bodies, but that we can too easily get in excess now. In moderation, it has medicinal properties, however. In this video, I talk about salty flavour in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), as well as some foods that are naturally salty.

Can Pet Ownership Ward Off Cognitive Decline? 01/25/2024

Good news for "seniors living alone": pet ownership can reduce risk of dementia. Bad news for anyone aged 50 and older: we're defined as "seniors" according to this report. Senior at 50, but none of the benefits😟😞

Can Pet Ownership Ward Off Cognitive Decline? Owning a pet is associated with slower decline in verbal memory and fluency for older adults who live alone, new longitudinal data show.
