New research published this week in Nature Communications from lead author Dr. Matthijs Smit, Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair, with PhD students Kira Musiyachenko and Jeroen Goumans.
The researchers used specific chemical tracers that are unaffected by geological alteration processes to identify the source of the rocks that made up most of the newly formed continental crust during the Archaean.
Trends in the compositions of these rocks indicate that they formed during slow burial, thickening and melting of precursor oceanic plateau crust.
This discovery provides a novel explanation of how continental crust may have originated without requiring an external driver, such as a meteorite impact - this discovery is a paradigm shift from the way geoscientists have understood the origins of continental crust and plate tectonics during the Archean era.
Researchers uncover source rocks of the first real continents January 31, 2024 Three types of granitoid rocks—tonalite, trondhjemite and granodiorite (TTG). Geoscientists have uncovered a missing link in the enigmatic story of how the continents developed—a revised origin story that doesn’t require the start of plate tectonics or any external factor to e...
