Architecture of Coexistence, Building Pluralism
Architecture of Coexistence is a concept that goes beyond the physical design of buildings and spaces. It encompasses creating environments that foster understanding, inclusivity, and harmony among diverse communities. In an increasingly interconnected but also changing world, the need for an architecture that promotes coexistence has become more crucial than ever.

Last week, Farrokh Derakhshani, Director of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, was a keynote speaker at the 2nd International Conference on Architecture Across Boundaries in Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, Suzhou, China.
The conference highlighted the challenges and opportunities brought by the new technologies to research and practices, whether they have no boundaries or create new boundaries to the built environment, a topic that has rarely been discussed from multiple perspectives.

Last week, Tomà Berlanda, an On-Site Reviewer for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, recently attended the CAA symposium in Kigali.
On Thursday, August 22, Professor Berlanda took part in a panel with Alex Ndibwami, Mark Olweny, and Annette Fisher on “Future Competencies for Praxis," discussing what the core competencies architectural education needs to ensure are addressed across the diversity and plurality of programs in the Commonwealth.
On Friday, August 23, he hosted a panel with Peter Oborn, outgoing president of the Commonwealth Association of Architects, Akram Elkhalifa, Head of the Architecture Department at the University of Rwanda, and Paulin Ineza, a 4th year architecture student at the University of Rwanda. Under the general framework of discussing academic exchanges and collaborations, the conversation took off after I delivered a presentation with the title “The Impact of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in Sub-Saharan Africa” that looked at the long history of the Award and the effect nominated, shortlisted, and awarded projects have had in the “construction of taste” in terms of contributing to what is understood under the label of “African architecture”.
The 2nd International Conference on Architecture Across Boundaries is taking place at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, Suzhou, China, from 30 August to 1 September 2024.
The conference will highlight, debate, and discuss the challenges and opportunities brought by the new technologies to research and practices, whether they have no boundaries or create new boundaries to the built environment, a topic that has rarely been discussed from multiple perspectives.
Farrokh Derakhshani, Director of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, will be a keynote speaker at the conference.

Professor Fumihiko Maki’s contribution to the world architectural discourse will be missed. He was a member of the AKAA Master Jury in 1986 and again in 1992. Subsequently His Highness the Aga Khan requested his participation as designer of the Aga Khan Centre in London, UK, the Delegation of the Ismaili Imamat in Ottawa, Canada and the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, Canada. These buildings and their spaces are reflections of Maki-San’s intercultural approach, and further testimonies of his architectural legacy.

“The Award has been most effective when at the forefront of identifying key issues facing the built environment and selecting relevant projects to address these concerns,” said Princess Zahra Aga Khan, at the Steering Committee’s inaugural meeting. “The challenges of climate change and environmental degradation are today intertwined with geopolitical shifts, migration, natural disasters and rapid urbanisation. I would therefore urge members of the Steering Committee to emphasise in this cycle, infrastructure, climate change as well as the important role of civil society actors in shaping how we live, work and play.”

Our Story
The Aga Khan Award for Architecture is given every three years to projects that set new standards of excellence in architecture, planning practices, historic preservation and landscape architecture. Through its efforts, the Award seeks to identify and encourage building concepts that successfully address the needs and aspirations of societies across the world, in which Muslims have a significant presence.
The selection process emphasizes architecture that not only provides for people's physical, social and economic needs, but that also stimulates and responds to their cultural expectations. Particular attention is given to building schemes that use local resources and appropriate technology in innovative ways, and to projects likely to inspire similar efforts elsewhere.
The Award is governed by a steering committee chaired by His Highness the Aga Khan. A new committee is constituted each cycle to establish the eligibility criteria for project submissions, provide thematic direction in response to emerging priorities and issues, and to develop plans for the future of the Award. The steering committee is responsible for the selection and appointment of the master jury for each Award cycle, and for the Award's programme of international seminars, lectures, exhibitions and publications.
The 14th triennial cycle of the Award runs from 2017-2019. The current prize fund totals US$ 1,000,000 and is presented to projects selected by an independent master jury. The Award has completed 13 cycles of activity since 1977, and documentation has been compiled on over 9,000 building projects throughout the world. To date, the master juries have selected 116 projects to receive the Aga Khan Award for Architecture.
