Becoming a co-director of Folkestone Pride

Folkestone Pride is looking for Directors to come aboard and help to organise Folkestone Pride.

We are looking for talented individuals who would like to put their time, skills, effort and talents to the position.

If you know of anybody would would be interested in this, or suited to this please nominate them! You are also welcome to nominate yourself (all nominations will need to be seconded).

PLEASE NOTE: If nominating someone else, please provide us with a contact email so that we may check whether they'd like to accept the nomination.

Once a nomination is received, we will contact the nominee asking for a biography of no more than 200 words highlighting the skills/experience that are relevant to the role and why the nominee would be suited to the role.

Being the Director of a company has legal repercussions we recommend undertaking your own research prior to nominating yourself or accepting a nomination.

The First British Gay Pride Rally was held in London on 1st July 1972 with 1000 people marching from Trafalgar Square to Hyde Park. The date was chosen as it was the nearest Saturday to the anniversary to the Stonewall riots of 1969.

Gay News, Britain's first gay newspaper, was founded in collaboration between former members of the Gay Liberation Front and members of the Campaign for Homos*xual Equality. As well as reporting on discrimination and political/social advances, the newspaper also campaigned for further law reform, against the hostility of the church, and the medical profession which treated homos*xuality as a pathology. In 1974, Gay News was charged with obscenity after publishing an issue with a cover picture of two men kissing; it won the court case. The newspaper ceased trading in 1983 as there were issues with finding sale outlets; W.H. Smith then controlled much of the newspaper and magazine distribtuion in the UK, and refused to sell Gay News or allow their distribution company to distribute it to other suppliers.

The Gay Liberation Front (GLF) was established at London School of Economics on 13 October 1970, in response to debates many gay men and le***ans were having in Britain about the way they were treated. The formation of GLF was also influenced by the Stonewall Rebellion in the USA that started on 28 June 1969.

In 1946, plastic surgeon Harold Gillies carried out s*x reassignment surgery on Michael Dillon in Britain, making Dillon the first trans man to undergo phalloplasty. He had previously been treated with testosterone by Dr. George Foss, and upon the spread of gossip of Dillon's wish to transition, he fled to Bristol and took a job at a garage, where he transitioned socially.
In 1946, Dillon also published a book called 'Self: A Study in Ethics and Endocrinology', essentially about being transgender (although this term was not yet coined). This brought him to the attention of Roberta Cowell, who became the first British trans woman to receive male-to-female s*x reassignment surgery. Being a medical school student, Dillon performed an orchidectomy on Cowell.

In 1933, the NSDAP (Nationalist Socialist German Workers' Party) bans homos*xual groups.
Homos*xuals are sent to concentration camps.
N***s burn the library of Magnus Hirchfeld's Institute for Sexual Research - an early private s*xology research institute in Germany founded in 1919, which was also destroyed. Hirschfeld ran the Scientific-Humanitarian Committee since 1897, which campaigned on rational and conservative grounds for gay rights and tolerance.

In 1921, The Criminal Law Amendment Act was amended in the House of Commons to include a section to make s*xual 'acts of gross indecency' between women illegal, and was passed by the House of Commons. However, the section was defeated in the House of Lords and therefore never became law.

Let's start with the year 1897, when George Cecil Ives organised the first homos*xual rights group in England, the Order of the Chaeronea, founded as a result of the belief that homos*xuals would not be openly accepted in society and so must have a means of underground communication. The Order's mythic origin goes back to 338 BCE and the Battle of Chaeronea, where the Sacred Band of Thebes, a troop of soldiers consisting on 150 pairs of male lovers, was annihilated.

Let us never forgot that even though Turing cracked - he was arrested for gross indecency in 1952 for being homos*xual (illegal in that era). The English State had him chemically castrated. Enduring this made Turing suffer not only physically, but mentally and he committed su***de in 1954...
The State is - it has never wanted people to exist, never mind thrive.
So this month, let’s remember to mourn and celebrate the (greatest icon of the 20th century) dead and fight like hell for the living.
