Year 6 still need your help...
In PDL lessons this half term, Year 6 will be considering their future career prospective with the aims to inspire children to think about aspirations and goals.
We would like to host a careers fair on Thursday 23rd May 1:30-2:30pm where the children can speak to professionals from a range of backgrounds about their career and what the job entails. In previous years, volunteers have chosen to bring along practical activities/resources the children can be involved in. The children have enjoyed immersing themselves in leaflets and looking at photographs too.
In particular this year, the children have expressed an interest in speaking to professionals from the following fields (however we would be grateful for people from any profession to come in and speak): police, armed forces, architect, gamer, scientist, actor/actress, chef, magician, artist, zoologist, pilot, musician, business owner, lifeguard, sports person, beautician/beauty therapist, carpenter, singer, sports coach, choreographer and mechanic to name but a few. The more the merrier!
If you would be willing to volunteer an hour of your time to come and speak to the children about your career, please contact the office team on [email protected]
A huge thank you in advance from the Year 6 team š
A Lunchtime Playleader position has become available to join our fantastic team here at Alverstoke CofE Junior School. If you are interested, please follow the link below for all information:
hampshire.education-jobs.org.uk We are looking to expand our lunchtime provision for children by appointing new lunchtime playleaders to join our friendly team.Ā
Our children are EPIC!
Completing the EPIC post we have 4 C's. Creativity, Challenge, Co-operation and Collaboration.
The children are encouraged to be creative and have innovated ideas, challenge themselves to be the best they can, work well with others and demonstrate good team work.
Congratulations to Myles and Oscar Year 6 for their outstanding creativity in their own interpretation of symbolism and abstract art.

Our children are EPIC!
I is for Independence - Children are urged to be confidant in being able to work on their own, focusing on tasks and completing them without the need for help at times. Using their own initiative and solving problems independently.
Our children are EPIC!
P is for Perseverance - Children are encouraged to not give up. They are taught to understand the effort required to do something and keep doing it till the end, even if it gets hard.
Our children are EPIC! Parents will be familiar with our EPIC skills ā children have the opportunity to earn EPIC stamps which lead to certificates if they demonstrate an EPIC skill. These skills help children to develop into resilient learners who are ambitious, curious and love to learn. Children love rising to these challenges using their EPIC skills to be successful.
We wanted to share a little more about these with you. Starting with: E is for Evaluation ā children showing the skills to take a step back from their work and evaluate progress and perhaps see where they can push themselves a little further to reach goals.
Our pupils have two Physical Education lessons a week - one indoors and one outdoors. This gives the children a chance to try lots of different sports and activities including invasion games, net & wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, swimming and outdoor & adventure.
We encourage the children to be competitive which helps to develop their teamwork and leadership skills and they love getting in the spirit of competing within their Houses.
Jumping into the weekend with a reminder of our Pupil Mission of the Week - to stand up for what is right.
The children have been encouraged to:
- Take notice of things going on around them and recognising who uses their voice for good
- Understand who includes others to make everyone feel welcome in the school community
- Notice who shows courage in speaking out even when it might feel scary.
Have a great weekend.

This week weāve launched our EPIC focus for the term - Challenge.
Weāve been speaking to the children about āmirror momentsā - taking time to challenge themselves, inside and outside of school.
One strategy we use to encourage children to achieve their very best is to ensure that they have challenges and extension tasks or trickier aspects of work to get their teeth into. Children love rising to the challenge, using their EPIC skills to be successful.
Bicycle Security
Our Bike It Officer John Clode has some Bike Security Marking kits from the Bike Register https://www.bikeregister.com/ and has offered us a free marking session on Wednesday 31st January. Parents will need to give their permission by email to the school office. Each bike will get two stickers with a unique code and with a corresponding card containing a QR code for those stickers where the rest of the details can be added online.
If a bike is ever stolen or lost and then recovered by police, they can scan it to identify the owner. The stickers, which are very strong and durable, act as a great deterrent as well.
BikeRegister - The National Cycle Database Used by all UK Police forces, BikeRegister's marking kits can help reduce the likelihood of cycle theft by 83%. Every year hundreds of cyclists are reunited with their stolen bikes through the BikeRegister database.
Welcome back! We hope you all had restful festive breaks. It's been lovely seeing lots of renewed energy from the children today.
For this shorter week, we're encouraging the children to reflect on what they're grateful for during the school holidays.
Wishing all our pupils, parents, carers and wider school community a very restful and peaceful festive break.
We're looking forward to seeing you all again in the new year.
Fridays mark the end of our 'mission of the week', with Mrs Slowther helping the children to reflect on all that they have achieved over the last 5 days. This week's Mission was Love with a focus on Patience.
Very well done to our 8 children who received special certificates in Celebration Assembly today for showing such patience in their learning and actions this week. What fantastic role models and values superstars!
Would you like to join our fantastic team here at AJS, we are currently recruiting for a KS2 Teacher for Maternity cover.
Please follow the link for more information.
hampshire.education-jobs.org.uk Due to one of our Year 3 teachers starting maternity leave just before Easter, we are looking to appoint an enthusiastic, dedicated teacher to join our friendly team.
Every Monday in Collective Worship assembly, we set a Mission of the Week for the children which is linked to a core Christian value.
This week, the mission is to show Love with a focus on Patience.
We talked to the children about how they can show love and kindness to others and patience in difficult times.
On a Friday in our Celebration Assembly, certificates are handed out to the children who have really embodied these values during the week.
Why not ask your children about the mission of the week and chat about how they can live these values.
Reminder for the Christmas Monkey Bizness Service Party on Monday 4th December 6.15pm - 8.15pm. Sign up is extended until next Monday. If your child wishes to go, please do email, call or pop into the admin office. One parent will need to be present and responsible for their child/children during the event. Hope to see you there!š„³

Applications are currently open for welcoming children into Year 3 for next academic year.
We recently asked our current Year 3 parents about the transition and here's what some have said....
100% of parents strongly agreed that their child has settled well into Year 3.
100% off parents said their child was confident to start Year 3 in September.
"The buddy system has been excellent. My son loves his buddy and it has made him feel really secure about joining."
"We have been delighted with the transition - O is very happy at her new school"
This week, we're introducing you to some key members of staff that provide important support systems to the school...
Mrs Gower runs our Service Club for all our children with parents or carers currently serving in the military.
She is a pillar of strength for so many of our children and their families. Among so much more, she sends blogs to parents while they're away with photos of their child's work and activities.
For more information about our support for Forces families, visit https://alverstoke-jun.hants.sch.uk/Service-Families/
A big welcome back after Half Term and we thought we'd introduce you to some of the team members providing support here.
Mr Barnes (on the right in the picture!!) is a minor celebrity here at Alverstoke!
Heās an integral part of the support system in the school and an absolute hit with the children.
Mr Barnes helps settle children into school life, supports them with play, talks through worries and offers specialist programmes to support mental health and wellbeing.
It's Friday and that means it's Celebration Assembly day!
Our Celebration assemblies are always hotly anticipated. Here, the House with the most House Points is awarded the House Cup. Certificates are given out and the Henry Hoover Award is presented to the class that has had the tidiest classroom that week.
Last week, Invincible won the House Cup and here are our Head Boy and Head Girl presenting the trophy to our Invincible house captains. šš
About half way through the school year, children have the opportunity to apply to be a Subject Champion across all National Curriculum subjects.
In their applications, the children explain why they want to have this role and what they enjoy so much about these subjects.
Those selected then have the opportunity to help the Teacher in these areas with prepping materials and recording successes and excellent work for display.
Here are some of our Subject Champions hard at work.
Did you know itās International School Library month?
Our library is a rather sacred place. All the children visit weekly and Hampshireās school library Service ensures we have new and up to date books regularly.
The library is looked after by our very keen Librarians (another Pupil Leadership initiative). Each year, children can apply to be a librarian and itās a role they throw themselves into.
Here's some photos of our Librarians in action as well as some Year 3 pupils enjoying the space.
We love seeing the children get so enthusiastic about Pupil Leadership opportunities.
Here's our Head Girl, Evie, and Head Boy, Myles.
Every year we have Head Pupils who work closely with Mrs Slowther, our Head Teacher, taking the lead on projects including managing the schoolās House Points system and awarding the House Cup and Henry Hoover Award during our celebration assembly at the end of each week.
The roar of excitement from the winning teams never fails to bring smiles to every teacherās face.
In our last post, we shared a rather colourful picture of one of our Year 6 class House Captains - because they're all so fabulous, we wanted to share a picture of them all.
We would also like to introduce you to two of our Young Governors (our oldest and youngest!) - Like the House Captain role, our Young Governor position is another pupil leadership initiative. It's a role children can apply for every year. They prepare manifestos and are democratically elected by their peers.
The roles give children a sense of responsibility and they genuinely do make a difference working together on projects to support the whole school on striving for excellence.
