Home | Back To The Source 17/07/2023

Hello! I know it has been a while - a lot has been going on behind the scenes and I have exciting news! I have recently opened my homeopathic practice, Back to the Source, and I invite you to take a look.

www.backtothesource.co.uk

Homœopathy is a complementary health system which has been used globally for hundreds of years. It is safe and effective for all ages. I am a member of the Society of Homeopaths and excited to be able to offer homœopathy as a mode of healing.

Often people seek complementary treatment for immunity, asthma, mental health, migraines, menopause, allergies, skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis, etc.), digestive disorders, and emotional states to name a few. Homœopathy takes in to account not only your specific symptoms - for example, not everyone experiences migraines in the same way - but your whole nature to find a remedy that will support you in healing.

Welcome, I will be honoured to support you on your healing journey 🙏

A systematic review and meta-analysis has examined the characteristics and effectiveness of pregnancy yoga interventions.

“Twenty-nine studies with 2217 pregnant women were included for meta-analysis.

Pregnancy yoga interventions reduced anxiety, depression and perceived stress.

Yoga interventions also reduced duration of labour and, increased odds of normal vaginal birth and tolerance for pain.

The quality of evidence (GRADE criteria) was low to very low for all outcomes.

Twelve or more yoga sessions delivered weekly/bi-weekly had a statistically significant impact on mode of birth, while 12 or more yoga sessions of long duration (> 60 min) had a statistically significant impact on perceived stress.”

The researchers concluded that, “The evidence highlights positive effects of pregnancy yoga on anxiety, depression, perceived stress, mode of birth and duration of labour.”

The reference for this study is: Corrigan L et al (2022). The characteristics and effectiveness of pregnancy yoga interventions: a systematic review and meta-analysis. BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth 22(250).

A reminder that researchers looking at the effectiveness of prenatal yoga on delivery outcomes undertook a meta-analysis with interesting results.

They, "identified that yoga improved vaginal delivery, decreased premature delivery and birth weight of newborns, shorten the labor duration." (Rong et al 2020).

A note about the birth weight finding before anyone asks. This doesn't mean that the babies were compromised or didn't grow well. The average weight of the babies in the yoga and non-yoga groups was within normal limits and the researchers seem to be suggesting that this might mean that women who did yoga in these studies had babies who were less likely to be affected by gestational diabetes, but this needs more research.

The authors concluded that, "Prenatal yoga is an effective complementary medicine to improve delivery outcomes and not to increase the risk of fetus, which is worth recommending to pregnant women."

Not all of the studies involved in this meta-analysis were of high quality, but it's great that this gives us some evidence and a better idea of what we need to look at in future research.

The heat coupled with the narrative around lifting of restrictions calls for a cooling practice themed around resilience. I am teaching a gentle flow this evening with heart opening poses (or gentle backbends), balance and strength poses ending with a kindness meditation.

The class will encourage the flow of kindness within and without, identify balance in our bodies and life, which does not mean statue still :-) and connect to our inner strength and bring that to the fore.

There are a few places left this evening - covid secure protocol remains in place meaning limited places. For more information and booking click here: http://jogriffinyoga.com/classes/group-classes/

Upcoming events - Booking by Bookwhen 16/07/2021

Urdhva Mukha Svanasana - upward facing dog is the pose we are working on this week. It is one of the positions in the traditional Sun Salutation sequence.

We will decompose this pose and preparing the body to open and lift into this backbend. As always, each asana is not for everyone so there are modifications and kramas (levels / options) to suit all abilities.

Today is the Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. It is the longest day (most daylight hours) and shortest night. It is a time also known as the Festival of Achievement. A time to be grateful for all that we have achieved since the return of the light from the Winter Solstice.

It is also a time to celebrate the return of the darkness, to go back within, inner contemplation. The yin of our year, following the yang.

Classes this week are dedicated to the Solstice. If you can't make a class, practice a sun salutation or two at home (there are many to choose from) and take time to mediate on all you have achieved this half of the year gone by and contemplate the coming months.
Here are some suggestions:
How can I compassionately shine my light out in to the world?
or;
How do I balance light and dark in myself?

If you would like to join a class, you can book here: http://jogriffinyoga.com/classes/group-classes/

Enjoy this celebration, resonating with natures rhythm
