Specialist Music Industry Therapist, founder of @weareMITC, editor of Touring and Mental Health the Music Industry Manual
A beautiful, brave, peaceful and hopeful act of unity by imam Adam Kelwick in Liverpool.
This is how communities heal - by talking together and listening to each other with empathy, respect and understanding. Breaking bread together. Finding common ground. Radical kindness rather than fighting fire with fire. To do that whilst under threat is remarkably courageous.
Adam, you and your congregation have my utmost respect. You are doing incredible work up there - it is so inspiring.
It reminds me of the very best elements of the religion I grew up with - that churches, mosques, synagogues and other places of worship can provide a sanctuary for the wounded and the rejected and bring disparate people together, with dignity and mutual respect. It connects us to our own basic humanity and an opportunity to be connected to something bigger than ourselves.
Why a Liverpool imam reached out to a far-right rally outside his mosque – video When about 50 people turned up to a far-right rally outside the Abdullah Quilliam Society mosque in Liverpool, Adam Kelwick saw it as a chance to heal divisions
On Friday The Music Industry Therapist Collective hosted our second panel at Performing Arts Medicine Association (PAMA) on The Psychological Impact of Fame. We talked about the stages of fame and how each stage can impact your sense of self, your way of being in the world and how you relate to other people.
It was great to have an opportunity to share what we have learnt and to collaborate with the ever-supportive Philip Selway who shared his experiences in the spotlight as a founding member of Radiohead, (we literally couldn’t have done it without you Philip!)
Thanks also to Dr David Giles (media psychologist who has written about the psychology of fame), and Dr Susan Raeburn who has researched musicians mental health and worked with musicians clinically since the ‘80s.
Love the look of this Blur doc 🎬.
The trailer has so many great quotes!
"it takes practice letting go of something that was your absolute identity and then practice being you without that protection", "Success will mess you up far more than failure", "just try not to die"

Delighted to say that The Music Industry Therapist Collective are returning to Performing Arts Medicine Association (PAMA) annual conference this year with a very special panel discussing the psychological impact of fame.
It features the wonderful Philip Selway of Radiohead, music industry and mental health research pioneer Dr Susan Raeburn and media psychologist and the psychology of fame specialist Dr David Giles and myself, (founder of Music Industry Therapist Collective and author of Touring and Mental Health: the Music Industry Manual).
Delighted to be joining fellow therapists and in sharing our experience and offering some guidance to those entering the field of mental health x the music industry.
If any more aspiring, training or emerging therapists want to come please email info @ music industry therapists . com for the Zoom link. It’s free to join.
Wonderful few days at in Mykonos. The team smashed it! If I was a tour manager I’d be angling for an invite next year… just sayin’…
Thank you for inviting me to talk about tour health and our work . It was great to make some new friends and connect with old friends, too!
As a fan, I loved hearing about touring with Bowie, Siouxsie and the Cure.
And with my therapist / tour health hat on - it was very moving to discuss the psychological repercussions of witnessing the terrorist attack at the Bataclan.
Excited to be headed to Mykonos tomorrow for the inaugural GTL Sessions where I will discuss my tour health research and the impact of my book Touring and Mental Health: the Music Industry Manual.
Thank you for the invite TPi Magazine!
I was back on Radio 4 this afternoon talking with about the psychological impact of band break ups, alongside and members of Liberty X. Catch up on BBC Sounds.
Next week ’s on, so tune in for that if nothing else!
Next Tuesday, 4pm, Radio 4.
Our new The Music Industry Therapist Collective website is up and running!!
Thank you Popjustice for designing it - it looks great! 🤩
Take a look for yourselves over at musicindustrytherapists.com 👀
Shout out to Jez Hindmarsh who has been incredibly patient over the past 8/9 months.
Jez offered to produce the audiobook and proved to be a wise and nurturing guide, despite anxiety impacting my vocal tone and the many challenges we had along the way… securing funding, the death of their gorgeous dog Charlie, and my cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Jez even set up a home studio for me so I could record while I was recovering from surgery. We got 7 chapters down but with 23 to go, and tour consultation coming in thick and fast, it’s time to acknowledge my reduced capacity and hand it over to the professionals.
In the words of Ace Ventura Pet Detective and my Dad, ‘I just can’t dae it cap’n!’.
We’ve got a professional audiobook narrator on board now so we can get on with the fun bit of splicing in the original interviews and making jangly intros.
Thank you Jez and for welcoming me into your home. I hope it doesn’t feel like a colossal waste of your time and energy. 😅
On Radio 4 today at 4pm, discussing why bands break up. Mum is recording it on her ‘tv video machine’. 😂
Coming up next, in May, I’ll be heading to the beautiful island of Mykonos 🏝️ to speak at the inaugural (powered by ). ✈️
It’s wonderful to be invited to speak alongside such touring heavyweights!
Looking forward to spending some 1:1 time with a small group of delegates, discussing the benefits (and challenges!) of healthy touring. 🌞
Thank you for a wonderful few days. I heard some drone bagpipes, ate some great food, had some saunas and started to build my confidence back up again re: public speaking.
As always, it’s the connections that made it so special - sharing ideas and experiences with interesting, fun and open-hearted people. Thank you . I hope our paths cross again one day!
There’s so much more to Tallinn that I’ll need to explore another time. Same time next year, perhaps?
It’s been a while since I spoke at something… but what better place to share my experiences as a and researcher than !
Looking forward to making some new connections and exploring a new city. 🌃
Curious about becoming a Music Industry Therapist? 🎶 🧠
Got some questions about it? 🤔 💬
We’re happy to share what we’ve learned in a bespoke Q&A session geared towards supporting aspiring therapists, trainee therapists and emerging professionals (in the first 3 years post-qualification) entering the field.
The session will feature several of MITC’s specialist music industry psychotherapists and psychologists with a variety of work experiences as professionals in the music business and various therapeutic trainings and orientations.
📤 Sign up via our newsletter - www.musicindustrytherapists.com. We’ll announce a date that works for those based in the West Coast USA to Europe in April’s newsletter.
Great post from !
It is vital that care professionals take responsibility for their own growth, stability and welfare in order to provide a secure base. When working with vulnerable people you are at higher risk of vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue and of being ‘triggered’. A trigger points to sore spots created by past emotional wounds that are not fully healed in the present.
As care professionals it’s important to understand what you’re bringing into the room (and how it might interact with the client’s material).
So for example you might examine where your psychological sore spots are and develop insight into the defence systems you developed during times of adversity when you were younger so that it doesn’t play out in sessions. There are many more areas to examine - therapy is a good place to start.
It’s not easy, it’s often not straight forward or particularly quick, but it will benefit you AND your relationships in the long run.
Looking forward to speaking at Tallinn Music Week next week on behalf of The Music Industry Therapists and Coaches.
I'll be discussing stress and resilience in the live music industry and beyond. 🚀
One of those full circle moments.
It can sometimes feel like we’re swimming upstream at , pushing against antiquated attitudes, invisible political boundaries, stigma, and misinformation, so it’s great to have a symbol of appreciation and support for our work.
Thanks to for helping me get there physically. It was touch and go for a minute but felt important to be there in person. Probably the only time we’re gonna get something like this!!
What a wild ride this year had been… Onwards and upwards! 😅
Feel very lucky to be able to work again. And now from home!
Blossom is blooming, brain is engaged, body is calm.
🌸 🧠 🧘
Whoops. Didn’t realise I’d obscured the book in the pic with my notes!
Last night TPi Magazine presented me with the ‘Industry Recognition’ award. It was a very meaningful moment for me and a great vote of confidence.
I’ve been researching the psychological impact of touring for eight years now, the results of which form the basis of my book Touring and Mental Health: the Music Industry Manual (available on Amazon, Waterstones, Rough Trade, Barnes & Noble).
I’m so grateful that the work we are doing The Music Industry Therapists and Coaches is being acknowledged. We work hard to provide robust and specialist therapy, psychology, consultation, panels and psychoeducation.
This year we are piloting a brand new full service health and welfare programme on tour with a very forward thinking pop star, which we are very excited about. No stone will be left unturned! Watch this space for more.
Last night, I had the incredible honour of being presented with the 'Industry Recognition' award by TPi Magazine sponsored by Medialease.
It's so encouraging to have our work at The Music Industry Therapists and Coaches, and with the Touring and Mental Health: the Music Industry Manual acknowledged by our live music industry peers. A real vote of confidence!! Thank you.
I see this award as representative of changing attitudes, and a growing community within the live music industry who are committed to improving the living and working conditions of people who tour.
Here's the moment!
Gutted to miss this next week… if you’re headed to ILMC swing by Room 3, on Wednesday 28 Feb at 2pm. 💫
Following our three-session series at in 2023, MITC returns to discuss occupational health on tour! Hosted by clinical psychologist , this panel will examine how health and welfare can be improved for those who tour, whether performer or crew, seasoned professional or just starting out. Panellists will discuss the conditions of healthy work environments, management styles, and low-cost interventions that can make a difference. Sice will be joined by VP of HR, Lee Bayman, (tour manager, founder of and trustee), and (business psychologist and co-founder of .live). 🎶🧠🎶
Thank you to Jurgen Beckers at Belgian mag .be for featuring me, my eyebrows and my book - Touring and Mental Health: the Music Industry Manual in an article.

Background & experience
After working in the music industry as a festival, venue & club booker, I took the step to retrain as a psychotherapist. After several years in the NHS and training at the Bowlby Centre, Regent's University, The Anna Freud Centre & the Clinic for Dissociative Studies, I opened my private practice specialising in working with musicians & music industry struggling with the impact and legacy of trauma. Recently, I founded the Music Industry Therapist Collective (MIT Collective), a group of therapists working globally with a broad range of therapeutic specialisms and music industry experience. The MIT Collective treat client's with mental health difficulties and consult for music companies and charities on the myriad issues facing workers in the music industry. Together, we are writing the industry’s first Touring and Mental Health Manual due to be released in late 2019/early 2020. I have been invited to speak at events for Comic Relief, BBC Introducing & Help Musicians UK, She.Said.So, AIM Connected & the Brighton Music Conference. I have written for Refinery 29 and Metro and am a member of the ESTD and the ISST-D.
