Yesterday our new students moved into their halls! We’re so excited to welcome a new generation of St Mary’s students to campus, and we wish them all the best for the academic year ahead 🎉📚

St Mary’s University has been ranked the best university for Education in the Daily Mail University Guide 2024. This follows The School of Education retaining its Ofsted Outstanding rating in all categories for Primary and Secondary Initial Teacher Training earlier this year.

The Daily Mail University Guide said, “In a city dominated by large – occasionally impersonal – universities, St Mary’s offers an individual experience, reflected in its consistently excellent scores in the National Student Survey.”

This year sees St Mary’s climb 10 places in the Daily Mail’s overall university ranking to 68th in the country. St Mary’s also ranked in the Top 10 for Student Support and Teaching Excellence, as well as 4th for Sport Science.

Commenting on the Daily Mail’s ranking Head of School of Education, Dr Jane Chamber, said, “I am thrilled with the news that St Mary’s has been recognised for the quality of its Education programmes. The education lecturers at St Mary’s are leading lights in offering students an exceptional quality of teaching and learning.’’

A huge congratulations to St Mary’s alumna Corrine Hall who has won three Bronze medals at the Paris Paralympics in para-cycling events!

Corrine is the tandem pilot rider for Lora Fachie, with the pair winning Bronze medals in the Women’s B Individual Pursuit, Individual Time Trial, and Road Race events in Paris 🥉🥉🥉

This brings Corrine’s total medal count to 7 over three Paralympic Games. The pair have already won two Gold medals, a Silver, and a Bronze in para-cycling events at the Rio and Tokyo Paralympics.

Earlier this summer Senior Lecturer in Performance Analysis Rhiana Galvin headed out to the Paris Olympic Games to work as an analyst with Team GB’s hockey teams 🏑🔥

Rhiana worked across the men’s and women’s hockey teams to complete performance analysis of opposition teams throughout tournament matches in Paris. She also provided additional support to Team GB Olympic analysts working from both Paris and remotely in the UK during the Games.

Speaking on this opportunity, Rhiana said, “It’s a dream come true to support a British team at the Olympic Games. The Olympics is a testament to both team and individual achievements in hockey, and it’s the pinnacle event for our sport.”

Edward Stourton has worked in broadcasting for 45 years, and regularly presents BBC Radio 4 programmes such as Sunday, the World at One and the World this Weekend. He was also one of the main presenters of the Today programme for ten years. Edward has been a foreign correspondent for Channel 4, ITN, and the BBC, and had published 12 books.

St Mary’s will be hosting an interview and Q&A session with Edward, followed by a post interview drinks reception. This is a free event.

This event builds on St Mary’s’ “Guardians of Creation” project designed to provide practical guidance to parishes.

We’re so incredibly proud of all our athletes who competed at the Olympics this year!

It was great seeing former and current students compete in a range of events at the Games, and to be coming home with three medals is so special:

🥇 Alumnus Aaron Grandidier won a Gold medal with France in the Men’s Rugby 7s

🥉 Alumna Beth Potter won Bronze in the Women’s Triathlon for Team GB

🥉 Beth Potter and Team GB won a second Bronze medal in the Mixed Relay Triathlon

👟 Special mention to alum Emile Cairess who put in a brilliant marathon time and finished in 4th place. This was Team GB’s best Olympic marathon finish for 20 years.

A huge congratulations to St Mary’s alumna Beth Potter who has won her second triathlon medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games!

Beth won a second Bronze medal with Team GB in the Mixed Relay Triathlon this morning, following a Bronze medal win for Beth in the women’s triathlon earlier last week 🥉🥉

The team finished the relay race with a time of 1:25:40, with Beth completing the anchor leg of the race to secure a medal. This was just 1 second after winners Germany.

“I had a great time at St Mary’s, it was three of the best and most formative years of my life. I learned a lot of valuable life lessons and made friends for life.”

We recently sat down with St Mary’s alumnus and talent manager John Dawkins, to talk about his memories from St Mary’s and his career in the music industry 🎸

John is one of the founders of the music management company Various Artists, and over the years has managed some of the biggest names in the music industry, including Charli XCX, Spice Girl Melanie C, and fellow Simmie Tom Grennan.

Having completed a degree in Sport Science and Media Studies at St Mary’s, John started out as a bartender in Camden before moving to LA for his first job with a band.

We were delighted to award an Honorary Doctorate to Prof Jason Arday during one of our Summer Graduation ceremonies in Westminster Cathedral this week.

Jason, an alumnus of St Mary’s University, was presented the award in recognition of his contribution to academic life, his charity work, and the support he has given St Mary’s throughout his career.

St Mary’s Rated Top Ten for Student Satisfaction In new analysis published today by Times Higher Education (THE), St Mary’s University, Twickenham (SMU) has been rated in the top ten nationally for Student Satisfaction.

We’re delighted to share that St Mary’s University has continued its outstanding performance in the 2024 National Student Survey published today!

The NSS found that St Mary’s had improved across all seven of the key themes, ranking in the top five nationally for Learning Opportunities, Academic Support, and Organisation and Management and top ten for Teaching on My Course, and Student Voice.

The University also ranked first in London for Academic Support and Organisation and management, and top five in four other categories.

A graduation ceremony took place at St Margaret’s Chapel at The Gillis Centre Campus in Edinburgh, on Wednesday 3rd July 2024. Presiding at the ceremony were Archbishop Leo Cushley, Vice-Chancellor, Anthony McClaran, Mgr Roderick Strange, Dr Jeremy Pilch and Dr Susan Longhurst.

The MA in Applied Catholic Theology is a part-time, two-year course and represents the fruits of a collaboration between St Mary’s University, Twickenham, and the Archdiocese of St Andrews & Edinburgh.

The new academic year (2024/25) begins in October at the Gillis centre, prospective students can find out more about the course, the ways it can support their professional, academic and faith development and how to apply by visiting: http://stmarys.ac.uk/edinburgh.
