04/03/2018

There comes a time in every film society’s life where Martin Scorsese’s “Raging Bull” is shown. For the St Anne’s Film Society, that time is 8:15pm.
Join us in the MOLT tonight to witness a masterpiece!

18/02/2018

Tonight in the MOLT, at the slightly earlier time of 8pm, the SAFS are showing "Knight of Cups". It's a Terrence Malick film - you know what you're going to get. I for one am excited.
Apologies to anyone who wanted to watch "Solaris". We couldn't get a copy in time for tonight but we'll be showing it next week.

11/02/2018

After a brief unplanned and unannounced hiatus, the SAFS is back tonight and we're showing a classic: "This Is Spinal Tap".
Made in 1984 this documentary follows David St. Hubbins, Derek Smalls and Nigel Tufnel, members of the glam-metal band "Spinal Tap", through a US tour to promote their new album "Smell The Glove".
Roger Ebert: "Spinal Tap is one of the funniest movies ever made"

Venue: MOLT
Time: 20:15
Length: 1h25

p.s. There's a small chance we won't be able to connect the laptop to the projector or get eduroam to work etc. in which case we'll be showing "Embrace Of The Serpent" which I have on DVD.

28/01/2018

Tonight the SAFS are showing "For A Few Dollars More" (my proposed title for every "Transformers" sequel).
This spaghetti western, directed in 1965 by Sergio Leone, stars Clint Eastwood as "The Man With No Name" a rugged anti-hero cop.
Roger Ebert described it as: "gloriously greasy, sweaty, hairy, bloody and violent".
Come along, it's going to be wild.

21/01/2018

It's time for anther classic, time for another heavyweight in the world of cinema to take to the MOLT.

Tonight the SAFS is showing Fredrico Fellini's 1960 masterpiece "La Dolce Vita", the story of a meandering, philandering paparazzo wandering the streets of Rome on his search for happiness.

"A brilliantly graphic estimation of a whole swath of society in sad decay and, eventually, a withering commentary on the tragedy of the over-civilized"

"Good stuff"

But don't take my word for it (I haven't actually seen it) come down to the MOLT at 20:10 and have a look for yourself.

14/01/2018

TONIGHT we are showing the stunning and timeless 2001: A Space Odyssey by Stanley Kubrick. A meditation on technology and humanity, this is an epic journey that leaves you in awe and wonder.

Rumour has it that the scene in the picture was filmed in the Gladstone link.

One of the best. Come see it at 20.15 in the MOLT.

13/01/2018

What's the series this term? Why isn't there a name?? Surely there must be a name???

These are all important questions, but we have decided that to beat the coherency of the 'British Film Series' last term would be near impossible, so instead we are just showing eight films linked only by being remarkably good.

Come to the MOLT at 20.15 every Sunday this term to watch some great films.

26/11/2017

It’s Christmas time! To celebrate the birth of a certain special man the SAFS are tonight showing Ben Wheatley’s stunning ‘A Field In England’. Released in 2013 this historical drama, set in the 17th century amid the English civil war, explores the themes of entitlement and cruelty through the story of a group of men wandering around a field (in England).
Shot largely in hand-held black and white wide screen, the film creates an unnerving and malevolent atmosphere, helped along by Jim Williams brooding soundtrack. ‘A Fied In England’ is an intensely visceral experience for the viewer in which we are invited to explore the dormant darker parts of our subconscious.

For those of you expecting to see ’28 Days Later’ we’ve had a slight change of plan... Apologies for the schedule shifting!

There is also an exhibition of nudes on in the foyer of the MOLT so take a look at them on your way in.

The screening starts at 20:15

19/11/2017

Hello all,

Tonight we in the SAFS are showing Alfred Hitchcock's epic and underrated 1935 spy thriller 'The 39 Steps'. This is the film from which all modern day escapist entertainment originates. It promises to be a mad one. (Length: 1h27.)

Venue: The MOLT
Time: 20:15
Dress Code: Casual

12/11/2017

Tonight the SAFS is showing Bruce Robinson’s 1987 cult classic ‘Withnail & I’.

In the first comedy of the British Film season we see breakout roles for Richard E Grant (later to star in ‘Bram Stoker’s Dracula’ and ‘Game of Thrones’) and Paul McGann (the guy from the Doctor Who movie) as unemployed actors living in a squalid flat in Camden Town in the late 60’s.
Based on the life of the director, this black comedy paints a surreal and hilarious picture of drunken and entitled young actors struggling to fill their time. It is a melancholic masterpiece.

In 1999, the British Film Institute voted ‘Withnail & I’ the 29th greatest British film of all time. In 2017 a poll of 150 actors, directors, writers, producers and critics for Time Out magazine saw it ranked the 15th best British film ever. (So it’s not in the top 10...)

Start time: 20:15
Venue: The MOLT (as always)

05/11/2017

What are they doing in this picture?!? Come to the MOLT at 8.15 tonight to find out!

I addition to solving this mystery, you will be able to watch the most iconic World War 2 romance film, from legendary director David Lean.

The BFI say "Turbulent passion and middle-class restraint combine in uniquely English style" - parallels to your 5th week?? Very likely. So even if you don't think your passions will get anywhere, come escape into the story of someone else who has better luck.

(Brief Encounter - David Lean, 1945)

29/10/2017

"So first you tell us they make films in England, what's next?"

Well, some big news: as of 29/10/17, Scotland is also part of 'Great Britain'. What's more, they even make films there!

To celebrate this magnificent revelation, we are showing a Scottish film today and luckily for us all, it is actually very good.

To get you into the mood, here are some Scottish translations of a common english proverb:

English:
My hovercraft is full of eels

Scottish:
Ma hovercraft's full o eels
Ma hovercraft's lippin-fou wi eels
Ma hovercraft's lippit wi eels
Ma hovercraft's breemin' ower wi eels
See ma hovercraft? See eels? Hit's pure hoachin wi them.

So come on down to the MOLT at 20.15 tonight to see My Childhood by Bill Douglas. It’s a lang road that’s no goat a turnin.

22/10/2017

Tonight’s screening by the St Anne’s Film Society is Nicolas Roeg’s beautiful and disturbing psychic thriller Don’t Look Now (1973)

Based on the short story by Daphne du Morier, the story follows a grieving couple who travel to Venice after losing their daughter. A woman, claiming to be a clairvoyant, delivers them a message from beyond the grave warning them of danger...

This independent British film is rich with imagery and showcases the innovative and arresting fragmented style of Nicolas Roeg’s direction that influences film makers even to today. From the slapstick of In Bruges to the balls-to-the-wall depravity of Lars Von Trier’s Antichrist, ‘Don’t Look Now’ has been cited as a key influence in the making of every decent contemporary psychological thriller.
It is also my Dad’s favourite film.

The film starts at 8:15pm in the MOLT.
