If I see you for eye care, can I still get an NHS optical voucher towards the cost of my glasses?

As we don’t provide NHS sight testing, we cannot issue an NHS optical voucher. Other opticians cannot issue an NHS optical voucher to our prescription either – these are NHS regulations not ours. We do however offer free eyecare and lenses to children under 19 years of age if one or both parents are members of our Eyecare Plan.

Cheap coloured contact lenses and party lenses can have serious consequences for your eyes, potentially leading to severe damage and even permanent blindness when not properly fitted by a qualified eye specialist.

Why do opticians blow air into the eye?

Opticians blow air into the eye to measure the pressure inside the eye, as this is one of the tests for glaucoma. Pressures inside the eye are regarded as within normal limits if they are below 25 mmHg; however, it is still possible to have glaucoma with pressures as low as 14 mmHg, so opticians use other tests if they are suspicious that the patient may have normal pressure glaucoma.

If left untreated it will take about 10 years for someone to lose their sight, however, when detected early daily drops are normally all that are required to stop the damage and preserve the vision.
