3 months in 11.6kg (1.8 stone) and 10% Bodyfat down.

Grant has also hugely increased strength, strength endurance and muscle hypertrophy.

Successfully putting on muscle mass is the result of an extended period of time, often years, of consistent hard work with both your training and nutritional habits.

Here are some tips when embarking on a hypertrophy phase. Of course adhering to proper nutrition and training protocols are paramount. These tips are more lifestyle realisations…

- Don’t rely on motivation. Consistent training and eating comes from dedication not motivation.

- Eating enough becomes inconvenient for both you and your partner/family. Be prepared all the time to eat when you need to.

- Eating enough becomes expensive if not planned properly. If budget is an issue make sure you bulk buy good meals, make a lot of it and rely on leftovers.

- You can drink alcohol - but I wouldn’t recommend it as realistically it’ll dampen everything that is good for your goal. The occasional drink won’t hurt - if it is occasional.

- Don’t be patient. Although building muscle takes time (even if you do everything right) you want to be hungry and work for it.

- Become obsessed with performing better in the gym.

having been riddled with various minor injuries this year that has resulted in me having to step back from Olympic weightlifting for a while I decided to crack on with some hypertrophy to keep myself interested in training. It’s very demotivating when injuries occur, but its crucial to refocus on what you can do rather on what you can’t.

Assuring adequate training volume with correct progressive overload is crucial for strength and muscular gain.

Nailing training volume is always a slight trial and error process as many factors influence your ability to recover.

Recently Kirsty has got this process hit on the head as she has made fantastic strength progress. Add in a slight caloric deficit and concentration on nutrient & protein intake and she’s looking like a lean, mean fighting machine. Big well done.
