An eye opening read for your information.

| More than 150 guns have been taken off the streets of the West Midlands, and dozens of serious and organised criminals put behind bars in the first year of our Major Crime Unit.

And shootings have also fallen across the region, as we keep up the pressure on gangs who cause misery to communities.

Last year, we recovered 152 guns across the West Midlands. That was an increase from 121 the previous year.

Last year, there were 92 fi****ms discharges, compared to 126 the previous year and 161 the year before that.

Our efforts to tackle serious and organised crime in the West Midlands are united under the banner of Operation Target. Find out more about how we’re tackling those who cause the most harm to the West Midlands https://www.west-midlands.police.uk/operation-target

Split into proactive and reactive teams, our Major Crime Unit was brought into force as part of a major reorganisation of West Midlands Police last year.

Proactive teams gather and develop intelligence to arrest those involved and serious crime and build cases which see them put behind bars for years.

Major successes include:
• Teenager jailed for five years after handgun found in bedroom | News | West Midlands Police (west-midlands.police.uk)
• Gunman facing jail after shotgun and drugs found in car on Great Barr | News | West Midlands Police (west-midlands.police.uk)
• Violent armed robbery gang jailed for combined total of more than 54 years | News | West Midlands Police (west-midlands.police.uk)

Reactive teams are ready to act whenever there’s a major incident requiring specialist staff and detectives to work through vast quantities of CCTV, mobile phone data and forensic evidence.

One of the six Reactive teams alone has charged more than 50 people in the last year, including 21 for attempted murder.

Dangerous criminals they’ve brought to justice include:
• Gunman convicted after shots fired in Birmingham city centre | News | West Midlands Police (west-midlands.police.uk)
• Three jailed for 23 years each for Wolverhampton shooting which left children injured | News | West Midlands Police (west-midlands.police.uk)
• Gunman jailed for 32 years over Birmingham attempted murder | News | West Midlands Police (west-midlands.police.uk)

Our Major Crime Proactive Team also runs manhunts, which are launched when a dangerous suspect need arresting urgently.

It sees officers form a 24/7 specialist unit, using a range of overt and covert tactics to bring the suspect in as quickly and safely as possible.

In the last year, they’ve carried out 71 manhunts. All of the suspects were found, and 44 of them were wanted for murder.

Their work has already seen the arrest of 73 predatory sexual offenders, caught as a result of undercover work online by officers.

And more than £900,000 has been recovered through the courts, and through seizures. Half of that money will be returned to West Midlands Police to invest in making communities safer.

Det Supt Scott Griffiths, who oversees the teams, said: “We’ve had a really successful year of targeting serious and organised crime in the West Midlands.

“We’ve uncovered criminal gangs through our proactive work to seek out those who use violence and intimidation, and when we’ve had major incidents that have resulted in people being seriously injured n the streets of the West Midlands, we’ve acted swiftly and decisively to investigate and put those responsible behind bars for years to come.

“The new way of working which came into place at the start of last year means we’ve got dedicated resources to quickly review CCTV, mobile phone and forensic evidence.

“But we’re also working really closely with local policing areas to understand the community impact and gather information and intelligence.”

If you’ve got information on those involved in serious and organised crime in the West Midlands, we’re ready to listen and to act.

Get in touch via 101, or via Live Chat on our website.

You can also get in touch with Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

We are working hard to keep communities across safe, but there are some simple steps you can take that will help protect your home against opportunist burglars.

Make your house much less tempting to would-be burglars by making it look occupied, consider setting a timer switch to make lights come on as it gets dark 💡

Close curtains and blinds, so your valuables can’t be seen from outside 👀

All ground floor windows and those which open onto accessible areas such as balconies or roofs should be fitted with window locks, unless designated as a means of escape

We’re using special powers to keep people in Walsall safe tonight following disorder earlier today.

We were called to Harden Road in Bloxwich at 5.30pm to reports of a collision involving a number of vehicles, and disorder involving a number of men, some of whom were carrying weapons.

One man was stabbed and is currently being treated in hospital for injuries which are not believed to be life threatening or life changing.

Officers remain at the scene this evening to carry out enquiries.

As a result, we’ll be using section 60 powers in the Blakenall, Bloxwich and Mossley areas (see map below) of the borough until 5am tomorrow (Wednesday).

The powers allow us to stop and search people for weapons, without needing to explain why.

Ch Supt Phil Dolby, of Walsall Police, said: “We’re working hard to understand what has happened and why, and are taking swift action to prevent any further disorder.

“We don’t use section 60 powers lightly, but we will use all our powers to ensure the safety of people in the area.”

Better to be safe than sorry!

The sun is out over Walsall 😎and while we enjoy the warm weather, let's not forget about keeping homes safe.
Criminals will take advantage of open windows and propped open doors, even if it’s the back door.

Keep you and your home safe this summer by following these useful tips:

🔑Make sure doors and windows are closed and locked. Even if you’re just popping out, lock up and secure your home.

🔒Consider installing window locks to prevent intruders from easily opening your windows.

🔊Consider installing a home security system with visible cameras and alarm systems to deter burglars.

👀Keep your valuables out of sight. Close blinds or curtains to prevent prying eyes from scouting your belongings. Shutting the blinds will keep your house cooler.

🔑Give a spare key to a trusted neighbour or invest in a secure key lockbox.

Hosting family or friends in your garden - don’t invite burglars to the party. Keep your side entrance, back door, or garden gate closed/locked.

Tidying the garage or dusting off the bikes for summer adventures? Lock up and keep that garage door closed. It takes seconds for thieves to spot and take expensive tools/bikes/motor vehicles.

For extra security keep porch doors locked, wheelie bins away from low fences or garages, and sheds secure.
