Speaker - Neelesh Shekdar
'Ajinkya taught me to celebrate life’, were the words of this father who lost his only 15 year old son to Acute lymphoblastic leukemia after a long drawn battle spanning over 8 years ending in March 2020. It is tough for any parent to watch their son go through endless cycles of chemo, a heavy financial loss and in the end, unsuccessful bone marrow transplant.
It was during this time Neelesh realized the need for societal support in fundraising, that today has become a cause close to his heart and resulted in the formation of a support group called ‘Master Ajinkya Shekdar smriti’ to help fundraise through the selling of a book on Ajinkya’s life on his tryst with Cancer and various events for fundraising to support paediatric patients going through similar journeys.
In this podcast/interview we will understand a father’s perspective on seeing his son go through this and how he came out a stronger yet kinder and compassionate human being who wants to do a lot for the children who reminds him of Ajinkya every day.

A must read article on AMR. Why you shouldn't self prescribe any antibiotics
AMR AWARENESS
The World Antimicrobial Awareness Week is from 18th to 24th November.
India is a country ,where Antibiotics are often self prescribed ,has witnessed an alarming level of antibiotic or antimicrobial resistance. India is often called as the AMR capital of the world. There is lack of Awareness and often there is indifference.
Antimicrobials could be antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals and antiparasitic.AMR resistance happens when bacteria, virus, fungi and parasites evolve to an extent when no medicine has an effect on the. This can be seen in Humans, animals and also agriculture. The main cause is the overuse of antimicrobials.AMR is rapidly growing global threat to health and wellbeing.
Drug resistant infections often become hard to treat and can cause disability, prolonged illness , longer hospitalisation and increase financial toxicity. Many ICU patients do not benefit from the earlier use of antibiotics.
AMR is one of the top 10 Global threats as pointed out by WHO .700000 people die due to AMR and by 2050 the numbers would go up substantially in humans and livestock affecting the economy in a very big way. There is a rising resistance to all known antibiotics.
Covid came in unannounced and we were not prepared for it, but the numbers were reported daily and everybody acknowledged the threat. AMR concerns so many different diseases of various illnesses and has so many spaces that the same response may not be achieved. The threat from AMR is looming large on our door steps. Caution and development of New antibiotics is the need of the hour.
We need to be Proactive with Doctors, try and prevent infections and above all but antibiotics with Prescription only. It has to be for the Right patient, at the right time, the right dose , for the right prevention.
The AMR patient alliance is a growing family of like minded organisations and individuals, raising the needs and concerns in regards to AMR and a platform to work on better access and prudent use of antimicrobials. AMR spreads across borders and work has to be done globally in Advocacy, Engagement of Health Work Force and Ensuring access to treatment.

Surfing with the Storm - Girish Nair
'The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others'. The moment one hears these words you know you are interacting with someone really special. Girish and his friend Ankeets journey is one of Resolve, trails, societal barriers and insurmountable difficulties. Yet in the end they create a beautiful space - a home away from home, that provides accommodation, hygienic food, administration support and everything else that a family would do for all those children with cancer who undergo treatment from a different city.
A PR professional and a cushy job would only describe little of what Girish really is. The heart of service where you literally put everything at stake including your own house is unheard of in today's times, yet it is only a partial glimpse into his journey in this space of service. In this month's talk show/ podcast we dive deeper into nuances of Girish's journey which has taken shape into what is now called Access Life Assistance Foundation Life Foundation. We will uncover not only his story but also problems and challenges that children with cancer face in the real world and how society needs to be sensitized with these stark realities of life. As Girish says 'there are always pragmatic and more pragmatic alternatives, however 'some things are just worth fighting for', pretty much summing up his love for creating home away from home. Pls. do join in to listen to this amazing soul's journey and much more...
