Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua joined other Heads of State and Government for the African Union Committee of the Ten on Reforms of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in Ciudad de la Paz, Equatorial Guinea.

He addressed the Nine other nine members, representatives of the African Union and United Nations this afternoon on why Kenya remains committed to reforming the UNSC.

24/11/2023

Today, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua joins the Heads of State and Government from the C-10 to discuss and solidify the Common African Position of pushing for the reforms, which began in 2005.

During the Summit, the Deputy President is expected to also contribute to discussions around the Common Africa Position, which among other demands calls for:

1. Enlargement of the UNSC to a membership of not less than 26.

2. Maintain the two categories- Permanent and Non-permanent with no intermediate

3. Additional two permanent seats and two non-permanent seats for Africa, increasing representation to 7seats (permanent and non permanent)

4. Equatable regional representation reflecting UNGA membership.

5. Veto power be abolished, but if retained, it be extended to the new members including Africa (upon reforms and inclusion to the Permanent seat)

Kenya is among the C-10 who comprise Equatorial Guinea, Uganda, Zambia, Sierra Leone, Algeria, Libya, Namibia, the Republic of the Congo and Senegal.

Kenya has has been at the front calling for inclusion of Africa in the Permanent Members seat at the UNSC. Currently, the UNSC, which is composed of USA, France, Russia, China and the United Kingdom, only allows other countries to participate as Non-permanent Members.

Non-permanent Members have no veto power at the UNSC a position that Kenya and Africa have contested against as segregative. With such composition, and with no veto power, Africa does not take part in deciding at this apex organisation, even in matters concerning its over 1.4 billion people.

Current Non-permanent Members from Africa at the UNSC include Ghana, Gabon and Mozambique.

It is worth noting that Kenya's contribution at the C-10 Summit today is important because the country's term at the UNSC as a Non-permanent member ended in December 2022. There is much to share on good practices and lessons learnt. Kenya is a vocal front-runner in championing the UNSC reforms.

It's disheartening how our media houses are unprofessional and even going against their very own fundamental ethics of journalism!

I've seen media and their Azimio counterparts misinforming the public that DP Rigathi Gachagua said that 10 Billion was disbursed to counties to SPECIFICALLY deal with the effects of El-Nino โ€” I dare challenge anyone who has any clip or evidence of the Deputy President saying that money was disbursed to counties to help counter effects of the enhanced rains...

DP said and clearly stated that the counties should allocate monies to be used to counter the effects FROM THE COUNTY RESOURCES. He added that the National Gov't can ONLY give what they can to COMPLEMENT what the counties will have.

These other shenanigans should be shunned because they are CONTRADICTORY to the public.

AGAIN, DP NEVER SAID THERE WAS MONEY DISBURSED TO COUNTIES SPECIFICALLY TO COUNTER EL-NINO EFFECT.

"We are shocked to see governors complaining that they are yet to receive money for El-Nino from the national government; such money is not coming. We expect them to use emergency money within their financial provision or reallocate money within their budget to intervene for the people they govern." โ€” H.E Rigathi Gachagua speaking today during the opening of the Development Partnership Forum.

The DP has instructed County Gov'ts to reallocate resources to curb El-nino menace. Says the national government and development partners will only complement what counties have.

22/11/2023

"This forum marks the beginning of a new trajectory that defines our common endeavors and aspirations as partners. It is my expectation that this forum will conclude with a good commitment and focus on results because what gets measured, gets done."

H.E Rigathi Gachagua concluded as He opened the International Development Partners Forum 2023.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua: When we tell the story, people will be shocked at how 2 billion dollars was taken from the central bank and put in a private bank. "Those people who are criticizing President Ruto need to be honest. Are they telling the President and the Gov't not to honor the debts that we found? These are the debts for the Republic of Kenya. Although they were not committed by the present administration, they were debts committed by the Gov't of Kenya then. We inherited liabilities and we have to figure out how to pay these debts."
