In May I turned 53 ❤️

I’m not super lean ❤️

I’m not a bodybuilder ❤️

My training is very simple and very old school ❤️

My biggest strength ? Is I’m BLOODY consistent ❤️

You can have the best trainer.
The best program in the world.
But if you don’t turn up regularly and take action, the results you want won’t miraculously appear with the work your DIDN’T do ❤️
:
For those of you just starting your journey or thinking about starting. A few words of encouragement and advice.

1. Don’t let anyone tell you that you’re too old, too busy, or too tired. Especially yourself ❤️

2. Discipline is critical in both diet and training, but don’t forget to live too. Just make the days that you aren’t as disciplined the exception and not the rule ❤️
3. Losing weight is about calories in vs calories out. It requires eating at a caloric deficit ❤️

4. Gaining muscle is about calories in vs calories out. To gain muscle, you have to eat at a caloric surplus ❤️

5. Fat does not convert to muscle any more than you can spot reduce fat ❤️

6. The scale will lie to you. Measure and take pictures to gauge your true progress ❤️
7. Getting into shape is a marathon, not a sprint. You will get discouraged occasionally because you don’t feel like you’re making progress fast enough. Trust the process ❤️

8. Having a long term goal is great, but make sure to set small, achievable goals. When you hit them, set new ones ❤️
9. Train with intention. I see many people in the gym just throwing around weights, using poor form, or haphazardly doing various exercises. Ask yourself why you’re doing THAT exercise. What muscle or muscle group are you trying to train? Are you isolating that muscle during the movement? For example, the biceps are called such because there are two heads to the muscle group. Are you tailoring exercises to train them both? ❤️
10. When you train, train hard. Push yourself, then eat well, sleep well - then you will recover well so you can repeat the process ❤️

We can extract sooooo much out of the Get Up.
From an assessment tool, to improving flexibility and mobility, through to low steady state cardio, core strength and strength in general.
Learning this exercise alone will have some kind of positive carryover to every other exercise you perform in the gym.

If I hadn’t read the study, I would have thought the number of calories burned would have been higher. The title of this study is: “Oxygen Cost of Kettlebell Swings” (PMID = 20300022)


If you’ve ever done kettlebell swings, you know that they are not a walk in the park


Ten college-aged men completed a kettlebell exercise routine consisting of as many 2-handed swings as could be completed in 12 minutes using a 16-kg kettlebell. Subjects completed an average of 265 swings during the 12 minutes (or an average work rate of 22 swings per minute)


Using sophisticated equipment (i.e., a device known as a metabolic cart) that is standard in most exercise physiology laboratories, it was reported that the males (who weighed 170 pounds on average) that participated in this study burned approximately 160 calories during the 12-minute kettlebell workout


Although females were not tested in this study, a 130-pound female would have expended about 120 calories


As a comparison, running at 6 miles per hour for 12 minutes would expend nearly the same amount of calories for males and females. Hence, this study demonstrates that the caloric expenditure is equivalent to a moderate-intensity run


But, at least for me, conducting kettlebell swings for 12 minutes non-stop would feel a LOT more difficult than running at a moderate pace for 12 minutes


The take home message for me is that if the goal is to use exercise to burn calories, kettlebell swings would not be my first (or second, or third, or fourth) choice


Kettlebell swings offer other unique advantages as part of an overall workout plan, it just isn’t the mode of exercise that I would choose to burn calories


That being said, just because I wouldn’t use kettlebells for this purpose does not mean that others feel the same way. I’m sure there are some people who hate running so much that they would prefer kettlebell swings

The 2023 Kettlebell Fundamentals Tour has kicked off with a BANGER in Christchurch over the weekend.

I always include movement breakdowns and the appropriate fix.
:
The Get Up alone is a movement assessment, it shows where a student is tight, lacks mobility/flexibility. It can easily be a low intensity steady state cardio session, a strength piece.
:
The main objective I try to give students is an understanding of WHY. Not just because someone said so. Understanding why we need certain positions is vital to performance.

This morning I had 30mins between clients.

My first thought was have a coffee and chill out, just as fast my second thought was hell no.

Just 2 middle of middle age young guys giving the body some love.

We met when I decided I wanted to try CrossFit some 11 years ago, I walked into CrossFit New Zealand and said “I think I can make it to the Games”

He said, “do you know how many people have said that to me ?”

I replied “probably too many times”
