β΅οΈπ€οΈ Last May 8 and 9, 2024, ISO trained 50 fisherfolk, LGU officers, and other stakeholders from 16 municipalities bordering Lamon Bay, Quezon Province on participatory action research methods and techniques. Equipped with new knowledge, skills, and mindset, they will serve as the members of the Baywide Local Research Team who will lead the rollout of the Participatory Vulnerability and Capacity Needs Assessment - Resource and Ecological Assessment (PVCNA-REA), including the formation and training of municipal-based local research teams in their respective municipalities. Representatives from the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist - Quezon and BFAR CALABARZON Region, notably, Regional Fisherfolk Director Rolando Rabino participated in the training as well. ππ
βοΈ The PVCNA-REA engages communities in assessing the status of their own resource bases and how they perceive and utilize these, as well as in analyzing their vulnerabilities and capacities to respond to hazards and risks. The training covered the climate change impacts on coastal communities. During the Household Survey module, they were introduced to digital survey and the KoboToolbox platform. The participants found it interesting and potentially applicable in other aspects of local governance. The Community FGD module explored hazard mapping and other assessment tools used to evaluate their communities' vulnerabilities and capacities. The Fish Sanctuary Assessment module ignited curiosity among participants about how to improve the state of the marine habitats in their municipalities. πͺΈπ At the end of the training, the participants planned the rollout of the research at the municipal level.

The ISO: Working for Social Justice since 1947
The Institute of Social Order (ISO) was established in 1947 by Fr. Walter Hogan, SJ, alongside his lay partner Mr. Juan Tan, to help laborers improve their working conditions. Since then, ISO has pursued the work of concreting Catholic Social Teaching in providing the disadvantaged with access to resources and opportunities. For decades, the ISO organized the marginalized sectors and pioneered social development approaches in accordance with the call of the times. Since 1997, community-based coastal resource management has been implemented in an effort to help small-scale fishers gain access and improve their resource bases so that they may improve their living conditions and cope with the demands of the changing socio-political, economic, environmental, and cultural milieu.
As a Jesuit social apostolic institution, the ISO aims to share in the creation of a society that upholds human dignity, sharing, democracy and sustainable development. The organization seeks to promote faith that does justice through the empowerment of the poor and marginalized sectors of the Philippine society; transformation of the unjust structures of power in the country through the promotion of a participatory, equitable, gender-sensitive, and sustainable development process; and reconciliation with creation.
