Art Deco "Thorn" table lamp (1920s) 🦇 Available now!

Thorn and floral motif wrought iron table lamp with satin glass lampshade from the early Art Deco period, in France. The distinguished Deco low-relief geometric pattern of the cone-shaped glass lampshade is supported by three rhythmically placed leaves, contrasting beautifully with the organic design from the lamp’s body.
In francophone late Art Nouveau style, the lamp's base is adorned with delicately sculpted leaves and flowers, while its stems transition fluidly into the body of the lamp displaying punctuated thorns. The intricate juxtaposition of the organic structure and the geometric motifs of lampshade render this design a notable transition piece.

Wrought iron body, satin glass lampshade
From France, circa 1920s

In a career span of almost fifty years, from the 1880s to the 1930, Japonisme defined Orlík’s career, becoming one of the most appreciated and distinctive elements of his oeuvre. Like many Western artists at the time, Emil Orlík’s work took inspiration from Japanese woodblock prints, ukiyo-e, its use of color and asymmetry, flattened planes and uses of compositional and negative spaces as well as the emphasis on diagonals.

At the turn of the century, Orlík became aware of the influence of Japanese Art in Europe and travelled through Asia in the year of 1900, visiting Hong Kong and then Japan, where he stayed until February 1901. His sketches catalog his travels in the form of a pictorial diary, in particular of 1900, in which many depictions of the Japanese culture can be observed.
