OPENING!
We are delighted to invite you to the opening of “Unless the Water is safer than the Land” by Paulo Arraiano at FORUM ARTE BRAGA
Saturday | 16 Sep | 6:30pm
Exhibition integrated in the program of “Encontros de Imagem 23 “
▫️
You have to understand,
that no one puts their children in a boat
unless the water is safer than the land [. . .]
no one leaves home until home is a sweaty voice in your ear saying: leave,
run away from me now
i dont know what i’ve become
but i know that anywhere
is safer than here
— excerpts from Warsan Shire, ‘Home’
What’s the difference between a test tube and a post-apocalyptic landscape? Between an aquarium and the primitive ocean? Time and the presence of people. The idea of someone watching. Controlling.
In one of these alternatives that presence does not exist. What always exists is the development – natural or not – of an autonomous microcosm, of an ecosystem far from the trace of human danger. Before or after the catastrophe – it may not matter – but close to what we have come to call the natural environment, aka Nature. A concept we have always struggle to relate without falling into the dichotomy between pure pre- Adamic innocence versus capitalistic utilitarianism.
It’s difficult not to think of Stalker (1979), Andrey Tarkovsky’s masterpiece, when discovering Paulo Arraiano’s Biophilia. This isn’t only because of the wonderful dreamlike and disturbing aesthetics of the works – raising critical questions of the anthropocene, climate change and environmental catastrophes – but also because they seem to investigate closely related problems of the horizon of the future – all the science fiction aesthetics that we see in them, the interior self and even a certain personal spirituality intimately connected with the environment. (…).

Happy to announce
Fábio Colaço and Catarina Mil-Homens participation at the Main Exhibition of Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2023, curated by Qiu Zhijie, under the theme “The Statistics of Fortune”.
“Since ancient times, ‘scientific’ research has been inextricably linked to religious activities, and the history of science has been entangled with various mystical elements. Religious activities are often presented as empirical evidence, and the role of the mind is emphasised as a key factor involved in statistics. We are interested in works of art that explore spiritual traditions from fresh perspectives, as well as those that consider the history of science and technology from profound humanistic perspectives. (…) The main exhibition presents artists from Japan, Indonesia, India, Canada, France, Cambodia, the United States, Thailand, Philippines, Italy, Singapore, Portugal, Mexico, South Korea, Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, displaying more than 90 contemporary artworks.”

PAULO ARRAIANO – Group Exhibition
“The Garden Of Digital Delights”
“The exhibition “The Garden of Digital Delights” curated by The PhotoPhore’s co-founders Ma**ca Denora and Domenico Fallacara, is part of FESTIVAL ZERO1, the festival of digital art and culture organized by La Rochelle University, from April 1 to 4, 2021.
Starting from Hieronymus Bosch’s “Garden of Earthly Delights”, the exhibition gathers a selection of new-media and video artists who are exploring the new boundaries of the digital world and digitalizing the reality through new technologies. The selected video pieces represent different elements of the real world (nature, landscape, living and human beings), transformed and recreated in the digital realm; a sort of digital cosmogony of the existence.
The exhibition aims to create an ideal parallel between the “ancient world”, analog and traditional, and the “new world”, contemporary and digital, which is still in the process of being formed and defined. Considering Bosch’s work as an attempt to summarize and translate cosmogony, cosmology and eschatology of the universe into art, “The Garden of Digital Delights” seeks to reread the same “philosophical categories” under the spotlight of recent digital transformations.”

“(Non)Depleted is a group exhibition that brings together contemporary design and art projects to unwrap the meaning of depletion in the current context. Through this choir of critical but upbeat voices, the exhibition explores unconventional roads to material and systems. That enables different tactics, methodologies and perspectives—translated into objects, installations, furniture and research-based practice.”

“The works Catarina Mil-Homens presents in this exhibition, On the Blade, emerge from the shadows, from the immaterial and the impalpable, carving their way to the light that resides in the space of the physical and of the nominable. A matter known by its duality, both an ephemeral force and a mark of permanence, charcoal is the protagonist of her works; drawings modelled by the repetition of the gesture and by the superimposition of compact layers of profusely black dust.
(…)
Reflecting on materiality, whether that of coal or existence itself, Catarina Mil-Homens overlays the weight of the medium’s visibility, which subjugates through the total absorbance of the light it never reflects, with the measurable physical weightlessness of the medium as object. The cut with the real happens in the asymmetry between actual and sensorial weight, between the palpable and the material — and once again, existence is sucked into a carbonic black hole. This illusion develops in the plasticity of the objects, on the texture we see and in the darkness we feel, in the subtlety of each grain that makes up the space and relativizes time. This is the blade of a subtle knife, one that finds the knot, the flaw in the dimensional plane we live in, slides through the fissure and cuts the way to the other side.”

Catarina Mil-Homens is a researcher with a multi-disciplinary art practice that extends across the mediums of drawing, installation and video. Her research focuses on the subjects of embodiment and consciousness.
The work developed by Catarina has its core on the mind / body relationship, it registers the sense of human mind attached to its material dimension and its interactions with time and space. This correlation wishes to investigate the questions of creation in relation to consciousness as well as underline the duality of the paradigm mater / non-mater, intrinsic to the human embodied condition.
The research actively explores the embodiment dynamics by overcoming the physical body through creative action to find what exists beyond matter and new ways to uncover it. The guidelines that determine the methodologies of the art practice are established by the intrinsic duality of its subject and are rendered into art production as: repetition, accumulation, transparency, balance, syncretism and imminence.
