ESC2024 The Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Malmö is set to become a true celebration! Visitors and residents of Malmö will get to experience the same fantastic feeling as the last time Eurovision was held in Malmö, but in an entirely new way from the 4th to the 11th of May 2024.

Community and culture is at the heart of what we do and St Patrick's Day was the perfect occassion to celebrate. Some of the highlights from this year include:

☘️Largest ever Irish festival and parade in Stockholm organised by The Swedish-Irish Society (celebrating 75 years this year! 🎉). First ever parade held in Malmö too and plenty of other festive events in Gothenburg and across Sweden.

☘️ Saoirse Irish Dance Company make the opening credits of the Late Late Show with their incredible dancing outside the iconic Stockholm City Hall.

☘️ A visit to Navet Respite Centre with Vice Mayor of Stockholm Alexander Ojanne . More dancing!

☘️Annual St Patrick's Day lunch hosted by the Irish Chamber of Commerce in Sweden with Ivan Keane of Keane Brewing as the inspiring keynote speaker.

☘️Roundtable discussion on doing business in Sweden with some stellar Irish companies hosted by Enterprise Ireland Nordics.

☘️ A visit to Katedralskolan Uppsala where students and teachers are building bridges between Ireland and Sweden.

☘️ The finale was our St Patrick's Day Gala concert where guests were treated to music, songs and spoken word from an array of talented Irish, Swedish and Ukrainian performers 🇮🇪🇸🇪🇺🇦. We were honoured that Minister for Employment Johan Pehrson and President of Stockholm City Olle Burrell delivered remarks.

Thanks to everyone who made St Patrick's Week in Sweden such a special one, in particular our stellar Embassy team who pulled it all off! See you next year!

Ambassador Jones paid her first official visit to this week and was delighted to meet with the vibrant Irish community flying the flag for in Gothenburg and the Västra Götaland Region. Thanks to everyone who turned out on a snowy Tuesday afternoon!

The Ambassador also had the pleasure to meet Vice Lord Mayor of Gothenburg Håkan Eriksson and his team at City Hall.

The wider visit included meetings on education, research, literature, maritime travel and much much more, exploring the many ways Ireland and Sweden can learn from each other and further strengthen our ties! 🇮🇪🇸🇪

The Embassy was delighted to support the Trading Spaces initiative this autumn. Eight early career architects from Ireland and Sweden were selected to participate in the exchange through an open call. Find out more via the link below!

Trading Spaces – an update on a cultural exchange between Ireland and Sweden

Last autumn, eight early career based in Sweden and Ireland came together in Dublin and Stockholm to pool their knowledge about practices as part of the Trading Spaces: Resources and Dwelling co-organised by the Irish Architecture Foundation, Dublin and Färgfabriken, Stockholm.

In the design of housing, innovative ideas and solutions are needed that enable society to dwell lightly, sustainably and securely on the earth. Trading Spaces was set up to support early career architects and practitioners in Ireland and Sweden to exchange knowledge and experience, discussing and confronting questions they face in their work and practices, and to explore potential future collaborations.

The participants - selected through an open call process - were Noreile Breen (Noreile Breen Architecture), Tom Lindsay and James McConville (Accelerating Change Together), Ciarán Molumby and Laura Carroll (Islander Architects), Jennita Schaaphok, Annika Olausson (Cedervall arkitekter), and Daniel Johansson (BYGGFENOMEN).

During the exchanges – which took place in September in Dublin and November in Stockholm – the participants visited each other’s studios, gave presentations, attended exhibitions and led tours around ‘typical’, atypical and other illustrative housing developments in their respective countries. In doing so, the participants shared the challenges and opportunities faced in both contexts, and questioned the role of the architect in addressing the issues of resource scarcity and sustainable building practices.

Sankta Lucia på iriska! This week we celebrated Lucia, the bearer of light during the darkest time of the year 🕯️ Philip Hale from the Irish community in Sweden kindly shared this wonderful Irish translation of Arvid Rosén's text to the famous Lucia song ✨ Go raibh maith agat!

Thank you The Swedish-Irish Society for hosting a wonderful community Christmas party! 🎄 Guests enjoyed the Embassy’s “W.B. Yeats and the Nobel Prize” exhibition. We were treated to excellent music by members of the SIS Choir who will be representing Ireland tonight at the sold out EU Christmas Concert!

An honour for Ambassador Barbara Jones to attend the Nobel Prize award ceremony, in the presence of the Swedish Royal family, at Stockholm Concert Hall yesterday to celebrate this year’s distinguished Laureates and their astonishing achievements.
