Timely colonoscopies are important especially after the age of 50. The frequency of screening will depend on your risk factors. Here are some guidelines to follow:

After the age of 50, you should go for a colonoscopy every 10 years even if you do not have any symptoms.

Colonoscopies should be considered earlier in life in the case of a family history of colon cancer or any previous disease or condition affecting the digestive tract.

Colonoscopy should be performed once a year if you are at high risk for developing bowel diseases or in the case of persistent symptoms causing inflammation and irritation in the bowel.

Endoscopy is a quick procedure done in the day. The patient is sedated and is asleep throughout the procedure.

For gastroscopy and colonoscopy, you should fast for at least 6 hours prior. You may drink clear fluid up to 2 hours before the procedure but milk is not allowed during the fasting.

Do follow the instructions of the bowel preparation given to you too if you are going for a colonoscopy!

You will be given a light snack and adequate time to be fully awake in the recovery ward before going home. It is best to have someone accompany you home as you should not drive for at least 8 hours after sedation.

Your doctor will review you before your discharge and discuss the scope findings and further treatment plan with you.
