It was a whirlwind of back-to-back conferences over the last week! 🗓️ If you were not able to get appointments📞 at our clinic 🙇‍♀️, it was because Dr Chelvin was away at the Asia Pacific Glaucoma Congress (APGC) in Manila 🇵🇭 and the Asia-Pacific Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (APACRS) meeting in Chengdu 🇨🇳🐼. Besides chairing 3 sessions on Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) at these meetings 💪, she also gave talks on “MIGS in Angle Closure” and the “PRESERFLO MicroShunt” 🎤. 

👉 By attending and contributing to such 👀 conferences, we aim to provide our patients with the best evidence-based care🫶.

The Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Annual Meeting is the largest ophthalmology conference 👀 in the Asia Pacific region, with delegates from the region and beyond. 🌏 This year, the APAO meeting was held in sunny Bali 🌞🏄‍♀️

Dr Chelvin 🇸🇬 is honoured to participate as a speaker in the Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery session, with other speakers from Australia 🇦🇺, United Kingdom 🇬🇧, Switzerland 🇨🇭, Japan 🇯🇵 and India 🇮🇳! And it was lovely to catch up with friends from all over the world 👭👬

Kai Kei is also an optometrist and she hails from Malaysia. 🇲🇾 She is detailed, sweet, demure and has a soft spot for furry animals. 🐶

Last but not least, we have Raudhah, who is our clinic assistant and ophthalmic technician. 🙎‍♀️ She is bright, cheerful, good-natured and is a K-Pop fan 🎶

Glaucoma is the silent thief of sight 👀, and is the leading cause of irreversible visual loss worldwide.🌏

👉 Early glaucoma has no symptoms because the central vision is normal.
👉 Glaucoma gradually robs you of your peripheral vision.
👉 By the time your central vision is affected, it is often too late because the glaucoma is very advanced. 😱

People with advanced glaucoma often only have a small central area of vision, known as tunnel vision. 😢

This loss of peripheral vision is a safety hazard 💣, and can increase the risk of falls and road traffic accidents. 🚗

Early detection of glaucoma and early treatment is important to prevent further irreversible visual loss:
👍 Get regular eye examinations after the age of 40 years
👍 If you have a family history of glaucoma, you should have regular eye examinations after the age of 20 years

Glaucoma specialists congregate in Rome for the World Glaucoma Congress! 🇮🇹🌏 Dr Chelvin was invited to speak about new tube inplants 🎤, and she chaired sessions on minimally invasive glaucoma surgery and the Hydrus Microstent.🤵‍♀️ It is a never-ending global quest to improve the treatment and outcomes for our glaucoma patients! 💪🔬

Thank you to the Asia Pacific Congress of Refractive Surgeons for the opportunity to organise and moderate the Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery Masterclass! 🙏🎤👁 Excellent talks by all speakers and a thought-provoking discussion at the end of the session. 👍👏

In the latest issue of EyeWorld Asia-Pacific, Dr Chelvin shares her perspective on the various Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery devices, and make recommendations for innovation and research.

Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) has benefited many glaucoma patients in recent years, by improving the safety of glaucoma surgery. As the earliest Asian surgeon to implant several MIGS devices, Dr Chelvin is accredited in the use of all available MIGS devices and is able to tailor the treatment and surgery to suit each individual glaucoma patient.

🔥 Hot off the press from Glaucoma Today ! 🔥 📸 Dogmas in glaucoma treatment need to be challenged, as recent innovations and novel research findings bring about a paradigm shift in glaucoma management. 💊

In the past, glaucoma surgery used to be reserved for patients with very advanced glaucoma, because conventional glaucoma surgery is associated with sight-threatening complications. With the introduction of minimally invasive glaucoma surgery and novel tube devices such as the Paul Glaucoma Implant, the safety profile of glaucoma surgery has improved tremendously, such that it can be offered to patients with mild to moderate glaucoma. 🧐👩🏻‍⚕️

Conversely, while glaucoma medications are usually regarded as safer than glaucoma surgery, non-compliance to glaucoma medications can result in irreversible glaucoma progression and visual loss. 👀😷

Happy birthday Singapore! 🇸🇬 As we celebrate the 57th National Day, it is timely to reflect on what we have endured and achieved as a nation. 💪 The last 2 years have been hard with the COVID pandemic and the associated restrictions,🦠😷 but with a high vaccination rate and a strong healthcare system 🏥, we can now resume almost-normal life with a low rate of COVID-related deaths.
