🤔is it possible for someone who did not know Excel to be the founder of a tech-led healthcare company? Definitely so!

Last Friday, we had the esteemed honour of having Mr Lim Wai Mun, Founder & CEO of Doctor Anywhere deliver an insightful sharing on his journey into being an entrepreneur, particularly in the healthcare scene.

From a telemedicine-only service provider, Doctor Anywhere has grown to become the first full-cycle healthcare stack in Southeast Asia, offering an end-to-end care continuum ranging with services spanning primary & specialist care, telehealth, preventive health, and an online health and wellness marketplace.

For budding entrepreneurs, Wai Mun has 3 nuggets of wisdom for you:
💡Overcoming Barrier to Entry (Yourself!) – have the courage to kickstart your journey and have the determination to continue.
💡Embrace technology – but it is not all about technology!
💡Realising the Vision (that can Evolve over time).

Wai Mun, thank you for taking time off your busy schedule and for sharing your valuable insights with our guests!

Mr Lim’s talk is part of the NUS Business School’s Asian Business Series - a platform for students to learn from thought leaders from the business luminaries of Asia. Topics cover macroeconomics, business trends and global issues that impact Asian economies.

Why is Singapore tough on Airbnb-style short stays? 🏘️.

Professor Sing Tien Foo from the Department of Real Estate explains how short-term housing rentals like Airbnb can lead to 📈 high home rental prices, community disruption, and overtourism-driven inflation in many cities.

Cities like New York and Barcelona, where short-term rentals are common, are now tightening their regulations. This shift highlights the wisdom of Singapore's early and strict approach to regulating short-term housing rentals.

When David Setiawan Suwarto (Bachelor of Business Administration Class of 2008) was offered the position of Chairperson of the NUS Alumni Jakarta Chapter in 2019 , he took it up without hesitation! In fact – in his words, he said “It is the right thing to do!”

David, who is currently Director at Surya Citra Media and Head of Content at MOJI and SCTV television stations in Indonesia, regularly organises fundraisers through the firm’s charity foundation, helping orphans and victims of natural disasters.

Since taking over as Chapter Chairperson, the NUS Jakarta Alumni network has organised variety of events, from networking dinners to visits from NUS students and alumni groups.

David recognised the importance of the alumni network in providing a platform for networking and job opportunities for current students and alumni! He shared fond memories of fruitful networking sessions during his undergraduate days and recalled the skills he picked up to carry himself well and engage in meaningful conversations!

“I’d like our Chapter to be the helping hand that gives an edge to alumni growing their businesses, from professionals hoping to advance their careers, and alumni expats wanting to make their stay in Indonesia more comfortable, to graduates finding jobs and NUS students looking for internships here.” said David.

It warms the cockles of our hearts when we see our alumni gather to network and share success stories and fun memories about their time in NUS Business School! 💓

Just like David, we hope to seeing more Alumni Chapters being set up around the world and more events being organised!

An opportunist and an entrepreneur. Meet Thaddaeus Tan, our 2024 Bachelor of Business Administration (Accountancy) with Honours Valedictorian.🎓

Coming from a humble background, Thaddaeus understands the importance of hard work and seizing opportunities as they come. After enrolling in the NUS Business School's BAC programme, he was inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit around him and conceived the idea of a start-up, ShareShip SG, a shipment-sharing platform for online shoppers.

While studying, Thaddaeus picked up knowledge that significantly aided his business-building efforts. During a business pitching competition, he presented his startup idea to venture capitalists and successfully garnered their support, securing funding for his venture.

Beyond his entrepreneurial pursuits, Thaddaeus also took the initiative to gain practical experience through internships in the finance and management industries, such as with Arena Investors, LP, an institutional asset manager.

For Thaddaeus, it is crucial to embrace learning and take risks to venture out of one's comfort zone. Before graduating, he secured a job with the global alternative asset management group Tikehau Capital as an Investment Analyst. While he may be focusing on his full-time job right now, his dream of becoming a successful entrepreneur continues.
