We had our first workshop of the semester just yesterday! This workshop was conducted by Jin Yang, our club's president who shared on composition and storytelling. At the end of the sharing, members discussed their favourite photographers and why they liked their photographs. We were also happy to have Robert, an alumni to join us too in this session as he shared about his experiences in photography. Thank you to all who came for the workshop and we hope you have learnt much!
We're live now! Do catch us in this PhotoDialogue Session! Thank you CDLSYPA, Deck and H for this opportunity!
Why the name SMUSAIC and what is its significance? SMUSAIC started way back in 2002, not too long from when our school first began. Back then, we were still in the Bukit Timah campus and the photography scene in Singapore was slowly beginning to move into the digital era. Photoshop had only been recently released and offered a few simple tools like colour correction and exposure adjustment. We decided to call our club SMUSAIC, which stands for SMU Mosiac comprising three branches — Photography, videography and digital imaging. Our vision for the club was to be a facilitation of like-minded people instead of merely a club which educates. During that time, not everyone had a digital camera so SMUSAIC took on the task of a service club, volunteering at school events and taking photographs. Everyone knew each other and there was much harmony and camaraderie in the club. At times, we would just sit down and chill together talking about photography or have a short critique session on each others’ works. This helped us to learn from one another and improve our photography skills.
A few years down the road we had our own studio where we could take and print our own photographs. We invited renown photographers like Russel Wong to share with us their experiences. We also participate in the annual SMU Arts Festival which is a showcase of creative expression through the arts. Over the years, we have gone on photo walks, overseas trips and conducted many photoshoots. If you feel that you have a passion for photography and would like to be around like-minded people, then do join us and we will warmly welcome you to the SMUSAIC family! :) Sign up link: https://bit.ly/2Dw9LUD

We were hard at work shooting our subjects for the Arts Festival this week! We shot some of the notable students and alumni who contributed to the Arts scene in SMU! While talking with them, we uncovered many hidden stories. Using photography as a medium, we hope to tell each individual’s unique story.
Here are some behind the scenes photographs of the shoots. We would like to thank our subjects for sharing with us their insightful experiences and taking the time off from their schedules to make this project possible! Stay tuned for more!
We had our practice session for the Arts Festival last friday to familiarise ourselves once again with the use of the lighting equipment! This session was held at Gardens by the Bay and we managed to try out some of the shots that we envisioned for our subjects! We would like to thank our models for taking the time to help us out!
Overcast skies and rain on saturday but that didn’t dampen our mood! We are thankful that the rain stopped and we could have our outdoor shooting session at campus green and at the School of Accountancy! Outdoor photography was quite different from Studio photography as we had to consider the position of the sun, the background lighting and the subject lighting. We learnt that it was good to get the background composition and lighting first before bringing in the subject. H also taught us some methods of editing our photos which we found useful for the upcoming Arts Festival photoshoot! We would like to thank H and TK for guiding us in this outdoor session and stay with us for more updates!
Preparations are underway for the Arts Festival and we will be conducting the actual photoshoots soon.
The past two weeks were definitely interesting as we came together to learn more about Studio photography from H!
This was a hands-on workshop where we had the opportunity to direct the photo shoot and experiment with different lighting styles and techniques such as feathering!
We would like to thank H for guiding us through this session and giving us useful tips for the actual shoot. We will be having an outdoor session later so stay with us for more!
As part of our preparation for the upcoming Arts Festival, we held a Colour management workshop to understand how we could curate viewers’ experience online. This workshop was conducted by H who pointed out some common problems made by photographers like colour banding and muted colours. He also mentioned key considerations such as colour gamut, dynamic range and ambient temperature in order to curate a good online photography viewing experience. We would like to thank H once again for this insightful workshop and stay tuned for more interesting workshops!
Did you know, the photo below is a view of the Federal Building at the Bukit Timah campus? The Bukit Timah Campus served as SMU’s interim campus from 2001 to 2005.
This year, SMU Arts Festival 2020 will be held online and SMUSAIC will be showcasing photographs and stories of the people that made SMU into the University that it is today! Remember anyone who made your SMU journey memorable? (e.g friend, professor, colleague, security guard, cleaner) Or helped you pull through the tough times to become a better person? We want to hear your stories! You can choose to nominate someone else or even yourself by dropping us a DM! Shortlisted nominees will stand to be featured in our upcoming SMU Arts Festival 2020 site! Hurry, nominations end 3 June! 🙂

Hello everyone!
Hope this post finds you well and safe during the current COVID-19 situation.Congratulations to those who have finished finals and all the best to those of you who have a few more finals remaining! Our last workshop for the semester, “Cinematic Lighting” was held two weeks ago and led by our instructor Hua Zheng who is a practicing photographer and a former SMUSAIC member! Hua Zheng shared about what it takes to create a cinematic shot (colour, composition and lighting) and illustrated his main points through past projects and analysis of filmmakers’ techniques. He also shared with us how we could achieve this style using Lightroom. Guided by these new techniques, we applied our knowledge to editing our own photographs using Lightroom! At the end of the sharing, we got the chance to create our own shots using LED light sticks! All in all, this was a very fruitful session and we would like to warmly thank Hua Zheng taking time to come down to share his knowledge with us!
Sessions
Part III: Finishing Touch
The third and last part of our workshop saw us taking on photo editing using Lightroom. Daryl started off the session by sharing how he usually edits his photographs and took us through some live examples. Some of the topics which were shared included colour correction and achieving the optimal lighting on each subject. The next section of the workshop was applying the skills learnt through editing our own photographs. We enjoyed a free McDonald’s meal while editing and some participants were also rewarded with cotton on vouchers at the end of the workshop! ☺️ We would like to thank all who came down today and hope you enjoyed the last part of Sessions! Look forward to seeing you at our next event! ☺️☺️
Ever thought of learning how to edit your photos professionally but not sure where to start? Part III of Sessions is just for you! In Finishing Touch, Daryl will be sharing more about his post-production methods and how he edits his photographs for clients. The workshop will provide you with hands-on experience in photo-editing and by the end of the workshop, you will create your own professionally edited photograph! This will be the concluding part of Sessions so don't miss it! Light refreshments will be provided. The workshop is free for all SMUSAIC members so do indicate in the form below if you would like to attend the session.

We hope you had a great time sharing, laughing and taking photos with us and see you again for Part 3: Finishing Touch! ☺️
