To support our students with their post secondary choices, we brought selected Sec 2 students to ITE Central to experience a life as a student there. They had taster modules on Business, Marketing, Media and Aerospace. They had a hands-on experience on robots and machines.

These are one of the many programmes YCKSS have that brings students to ITE, Polys and JC. Our students will experience a range of it over their years with us.

Yio Chu Kang Secondary School warmly welcomed staff and students from Kiangsu-Chekiang College (Kwai Chung), Hong Kong! The visit started off with both schools exchanging insights about each country’s education system and understanding more about each school’s subjects offered, facilities, and after-school programmes. The students went on to interact and bond over ice-breakers and a collaborative broadcasting activity. They got the chance to take on the role as a broadcaster highlighting key points on relevant topics such as water shortage and technology. Day 1 concluded with a school tour.

On Day 2, YCKSS and KCCKC continued their interactions as they embarked on a learning journey at Gardens by the Bay to learn about the plants and environmental sustainability.

On the 18th and 19th April 2024, our Secondary 3 students were engaged in a series of engaging activities designed around the 2024 School Theme of Future-Ready Begins Now and the Sec Three Level theme of Resilence. Through this programme, students were able to gain awareness of key resilience mindset and habits to overcome failure and setbacks and learn lessons from it; believe in their ability to be resilient and increase their self-efficacy and help-seeking ability; adopt positive resilient habits and practical tools for solution seeking, managing stress and emotions and gaining insights from failure.

I’ve learnt the need to collaborate with others to complete a task in real life. Therefore, it is important to have an open mindset to accommodate diverse views, recognize individual strengths and communicate respectfully for a team to work effectively towards a common goal. - Tay Zi Hong Leroy

From the level programme, I learnt how to use non-violent communication. I can use the skills I learnt today in the future. I am seeing the change in me. I also enjoyed writing the gratitude cards for my teachers and friends and it gave me a chance to express my appreciation and gratitude towards the people around me. -Elise Tan

On the 18th and 19th April 2024, our Secondary 4 & 5 students were engaged in a series of engaging activities that designed around the 2024 School Theme of Future-Ready Begins Now and Level theme of Future. Through this programme, students acquired key knowledge to make informed decisions about their education pathways, learning and apply social skills such as networking skills, skills in starting conversation in a small group and ability to engage in a conversation. More importantly, they learnt and had opportunities to apply interview skills.

The 2-day level programme was a refreshing departure from my past experiences, offering engaging activities and lessons that truly captured my interest. It equipped me with invaluable insights, particularly in the realm of interviewing techniques - what to say, how to present oneself with the right posture and attire. Additionally, delving into today’s major industries, including the dynamic sports industry and other thriving sectors, broadened my understanding significantly. As a result of this enriching experience, I now feel markedly more confident and well-prepared to embark on my chosen path. - Aden Bin Azam

I enjoyed the DISC survey to find out my personality type. These personality types show me different characteristics of people and I could relate to some of them. During the survey, there were questions about how people view me. With the help of my friends’ opinions, I completed the survey and could understand myself better. - Ashley Farisya Binte Muhamad Faizal

Grateful for the insights given by our esteemed alumni who recently returned to Yio Chu Kang Secondary School to share their firsthand experiences serving National Service (NS) during the NS Men Engagement session. Their sharing allowed their juniors to see through lenses of different perspectives and to be educated on the importance of NS as a cornerstone of Singapore’s defence and security and a key component of National Education (NE) and Character and Citizenship Education (CCE).

On the 18 and 19 April 2024, our Secondary 2 students were engaged in a series of exciting activities aimed to hone their communication and teambuilding skills.

During the Synergy Level Programme, students learned the importance of maintaining good relationships with their peers, leadership and teambuilding skills. Without a doubt, the two favourites amongst the students are Archery Tag and Game of Drones.

Here are some reflections from our Secondary 2 students:

Lee Liang Ping from Sec 2A

I learned how to communicate effectively and the 5As - Alignment, Acceptance, Accomplishment, Accessibility and Appreciation – of good relationships. I also learned that my classmates and I can work well together. We learnt about Tuckman’s Team and Group Development model and its 4 stages of team building. I wished we had more time to build the obstacle course in the Game of Drones as some of us did not get to complete it. Overall, it was a fun and meaningful experience.

Grace Chia from Sec 2B

We had many different opportunities to work as a class using different scenarios. For example, in the alphabet game, we tapped on the different strengths of our classmates. Some could jump a further distance than others and some were making decisions on the next move to be made. Participating in these activities helped us to synergise and develop our teamwork. Although it took a few tries, we managed to achieve our goal of under 30 seconds. It was a fun and engaging experience to learn to work together with different people.

Chua Jia Xuan Hartlyn Caite from Sec 2B

Since my team and I were the first team to play Archery Tag, we did not really know the opponent’s strategy. We later analysed how different teams played and adapted our strategies during our second round. We changed our ways of playing in terms of formation and thought of a way to communicate so that we can avoid shooting the same person at the same time.

From the first round, we realised we were not working together as a team and played individually so during the second round, we tried to revive more players and because of that we won!

Ang Junwu from Class 2C

I enjoyed Archery Tag very much. It requires every team member to contribute their unique strengths and abilities to work together as a team. Archery Tag has also taught me that teamwork is not merely about individuals but rather about collective cooperation, mutual respect, and a shared commitment towards our common goal.

Erlyra Qasdina Binte Khairil from Class 2C

During the Synergy Level Programme, I did many fun activities such as the “Escape from the Forbidden Island” game, “Crossing the Acid River” game, Tic Tac Toe, Hockey game and more. During these activities, I learnt about teamwork and how communication is important to work together. We need to consider and respect each other's perspective or suggestions when we are facing challenges.

Kerwin Yeo Hong Wei from Sec 2D

To me, the activities of the Synergy Level Programme allowed me to develop teamwork and strengthen bonds with my classmates, especially during the Game Of Drones, where my teammates and I worked together closely to complete the obstacle course as quickly as we could. Not only that, I learned about the 5As of Good Relationships (Alignment, Acceptance, Accomplishment, Accessibility and Appreciation) before the activities which allowed me to understand how to effectively work together as a team and how to develop resilience. I hope that next year’s level programme would be as fun, if not better than this year’s level programme!

Wu Jinlin from Sec 2F

The level programme allowed me to enhance my teamwork and leadership skills through various activities. We discussed different strategies and collaborated to overcome various challenges. I learned to appreciate everyone's hard work as well. It was definitely a valuable opportunity for me to develop the school's GROWTH values.
