Check out our NEW program at the Vermilion Parish Library! A Taste of Herbs & Spices is a new outreach program by our local Nutrition Extension Agent, Mandy Armentor along with other agents across the state. Each month a different herb or spice will be featured along with information on how to use it in your cooking and a sample with a suggested recipe to try at your house. This program is an effort by the LSU AgCenter to help people decrease their salt intake by using herbs and spices for flavor. This month's featured spice is ginger. To pick up the informational handout and sample of the spice along with a recipe, visit the Abbeville, Kaplan, or Gueydan branches of the Vermilion Parish Library. Supplies are very limited so we ask only one sample/handout per person. Our Seventh Ward Elementary school garden is planted! Thanks to Mr. Maddox Miller, Horticulture Agent for the LSU AgCenter for your help with this project! Mr. Maddox taught the students how to measure and administer fertilizer to the garden beds, plant seeds and already started plants, and what to expect in the coming weeks of our plant's growth. We look forward to harvesting sugar snap peas, carrots, beets, turnips, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, and kale. Stay tuned for progress and fun recipes when we harvest!
