🚗 Love them or not, roundabouts are here to stay—and Syracuse just got its first one! 🌟

Why? It’s simple: Roundabouts are SAFER and more EFFICIENT than traditional intersections. This new addition is already improving traffic flow for drivers exiting I-481 southbound (future I-81) and entering I-81 northbound.

🚧 While crews are still hard at work, the complete roundabout will feature full pedestrian crossings, rapid flashing beacons, pavement markings, and clear signage to make it even safer for everyone.

❄️ We know you love these reminders: Winter is 100 days away!

At NYSDOT, our snow preparation never stops. Our crews work year-round to ensure we're ready to keep our roads safe during New York's snow and ice season. Since we never know when the first snowfall will be (hopefully not too soon!), checking your vehicle now gives you plenty of time to get ready. Inspect your tires, wipers, and emergency kit. Let’s all stay safe on the roads this winter!

🗽📻 Mukesh Desai, a former NYSDOT employee, was working near the twin towers 23 years ago today. Hear his deeply personal experiences from that tragic day and the critical work NYSDOT did in the aftermath on our special podcast “NYSDOT Remembers 9/11” - podcast.dot.ny.gov

His story is a powerful reminder of the strength, resilience, and dedication of those who stepped forward when we needed them most.

09/11/2024

On this solemn day, we honor the 23rd anniversary of September 11, a day that forever changed our nation. At NYSDOT, we pause to remember the lives lost and the profound impact it had on all of us.

We hold in our thoughts three of our own, Ignatius Adanga, Charles Lesperance, and See Wong Shum, who were tragically taken from us. Their dedication to service continues to be a source of inspiration and strength for our entire NYSDOT family.

As we reflect on this day, we also pay tribute to the heroic public servants and first responders who demonstrated unmatched courage and selflessness, rushing to aid those in need. Their bravery remains a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience of our communities.

We will never forget. 🕊️

Do you know why NYSDOT uses these temporary automated traffic signals? 🚦

With over 200 work zone crashes happening in 2023, keeping our crews safe is our top priority. These automated signals help us do just that by eliminating the need for flaggers often exposed to traffic hazards.

By deploying these devices when possible, we can help keep our workers out of harm's way and ensure smooth traffic flow. So next time you see these signals, remember to treat them as you would any other traffic light. Let’s keep our roads safe for everyone!

🚸🚌 Hey there, New York drivers! 🚗 School is back in session, and that means kids are back out there walking to and from school bus stops across New York State. Help keep them safe: Slow down, eliminate distractions, and obey school bus laws.

Today, NYSDOT Commissioner Dominguez led an event highlighting the significant impact of our I-81 Local Hire Initiative on Syracuse residents. Thanks to New York State's continued support and investment, we’re not just constructing the I-81 Viaduct Project—we’re also creating life-changing career opportunities for local residents.

We’re proud to share that 136 Syracuse residents have already joined the project through this initiative. By offering specialized training and essential tools, we’re ensuring that these locals have the chance to work on this transformative project and advance their careers within their own community.

Together, we’re building both infrastructure and futures in Syracuse! 🌆

If kids in your area aren’t back to school yet, they will be soon, and school bus safety needs to be a top priority! When you see those red lights flashing, that's your cue to stop at least 20 feet from the bus. A stopped school bus means you wait. No exceptions.

The unofficial end of summer is here... we don't like it either, but as we head into Labor Day weekend, we're committed to making your travels smoother and safer. To help you enjoy those final summer trips, NYS has suspended all construction-related lane closures.

This means fewer delays and a more pleasant journey as you hit the road. Remember to stay safe by keeping an appropriate following distance, obeying speed limits, and never driving under the influence.

Let’s all work together to make this holiday weekend great for everyone. Have a fantastic and safe Labor Day Weekend! 🌟🚦

Looks like one of our traffic cameras has a new guest star—a hawk keeping a watchful eye on the NYS Fair! When we asked for a bird’s eye view of the roads, we didn’t expect it to be quite so literal. Thanks for the assist, feathered friend! 😉

🚗Thanks to the drivers moving over! We see you and appreciate you! NY's Move Over Law applies to ALL VEHICLES. This means when you see ANY vehicle (including work zones) on the side of the highway:

• Slow down & Move over when it is safe to do so 👉It’s the law!

🚧 Work zone awareness - Help protect the dedicated women and men who keep our roads safe—they're our neighbors, our community. Let's prioritize their safety every day. Slow down, stay vigilant, and drive with care. Together, we can make a difference!

08/26/2024

School will be starting soon and there still seems to be some confusion about when to stop. Two lanes? Four lanes? It doesn't matter. When the school bus stops, you stop too.

🚨 Big Changes Are Coming to Watertown International Airport! 🚨

Step back in time with us as we revisit the 1950s through a classic film, "Wings Over Dexter," shot at Watertown International Airport. 🎥✈️ This nostalgic look into the past beautifully contrasts with the exciting future ahead! 👇

Thanks to $28M in funding from Governor Kathy Hochul’s Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition—administered by NYSDOT—a brand new terminal is on the horizon. This project is set to transform the airport and bring monumental improvements to travelers and the community alike. 🌟

A huge shoutout to the Gordon Knox Collection and UNT Libraries for making this glimpse into history possible. Stay tuned for more updates as we build a brighter future for aviation in Upstate New York!

🚧 Road Safety Reminder 🚧
While our Hudson Valley crew takes advantage of the ongoing closure on Route 218 for some routine maintenance, it's important to remember that all road closures are put in place to keep everyone safe. Whether it’s Route 218 or any other closed roadway, these closures apply to ALL modes of travel—vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians.

⚠️ Please respect road closed signs and never attempt to enter these areas. Your safety always comes first!
